Bupa registered peri-menopause specialist gynae

Hi
My GP has referred me to my local hospital gynae department to look further into my hormonal and peri-menopause issues as the HRT regime she has put me on isn't working. As the wait is long, my health insurers Benenden can pay for me to see a Bupa registered private doctor sooner. I used to be under Dr Panay at Chelsea and Westminster for PMS who was amazing but he's not Bupa registered. Needs to be a Gynecologist who understands extreme sensitivity to changes in hormones, irregular bleeding, perimenopause etc I'm on the Surrey/London borders. Thanks

@scrumbum I'd be very surprised if Mr Panay isn't registered with all private insurers. Do you think it's worth checking? If you are insured with Benenden they will have their own lists of private consultants they approve. BUPA is just another insurer - it's not a medical association which approves or not consultants.

There is no such thing as 'BUPA' registered. BUPA is an insurance provider. They don't 'register' consultants, as a rule. Each consultant is approved by certain insurance providers.

Are you sure they don't mean registered with the BMS? British Menopause Society list of drs.

Most insurance companies will not cover menopause anyway, although they will cover appts and investigations for gynae issues but only until they are diagnosed as menopause (then you would have to pay for your own appts etc if you carried on seeing the dr.)

My consultant is London based but working remotely at the moment (most are) but I think you ought to check with Benenden what they mean. Why would one insurance company want a dr to be approved by a competitor insurance company?

Thank you for your reply. I am sure about what I am looking for - Benenden operate very differently and can pay for me to see a private Gynae as long as they are on their list which is actuallt the same as the list of Bupa registered “fee assured” doctors. The first thing I checked with Benenden was whether Dr Panay is on their lost and he’s not. So I’m still looking for recommendations of Gynaes who are good With menopause and hrt who are “fee assured” on the Bupa find a doctor website. Obviously any names would be good and I can check if they’re approved . Thanks

I still find it confusing unless Benenden is a cheaper version of BUPA and they are actually the same company- is this the case perhaps?

My experience with private insurance is they will not cover HRT which is what you are wanting to see a dr about.

I first saw my gynae over 10 years ago and my symptoms were covered but ongoing meno treatment is not, and that includes HRT.

Is it possible that Benenden will not 'stretch' to Mr Panay's fees? Is he too pricey for them?

As a by the way I've heard he has a waiting list for private patients up to almost 6 months (but you can check.)

Are you able to pay for a consultation with him if you want to see him or another consultant?

Why not do it the other way round? Call Mr Panay's office and ask which insurance companies he is registered with - just to check?

There may be certain reasons (financial or otherwise) why he chooses not to be with them on their list. It won't be because of his expertise.

Thank you. I will change my post as it seems to be taking the focus away from actually what will be most useful for me which is recommendations. I know exactly what Benenden will and will not fund and that was not my question! Thanks anyway

BUPA have a find a specialist tool, I put menopause and London in and then filtered by G&O and fed assured.
You can refine it by using your postcode finder.bupa.co.uk/Consultant/search/?fspecialityId%5B%5D=14&ffeeAssured=1&fhospitalNetworkId=&qk=Menopause+&ql=London&qlo=&qla=&qn=&order=&rpp=10&hospitalSwiftId=&fpathway=&giottoFormFlag_consultant=1#start

Sorry @scrumbrum12. I'm not helping! My consultant is within your search area and is excellent but no idea if they are bupa approved.

They were approved originally by my insurers but after diagnosis and hormonal treatment required I had to pay for appts.
