Hi all.
I'm 47 and have been in peri for a few years now. Periods are still very regular. Last few have been horrific in that I've been flooding, especially when I'm standing up or walking. Also passing clots 5cm +.
Periods are also extremely painful.

Not on contraception as DH had the snip years ago.

Will this ease off as time goes by?

Yes it should ease off I had horrific periods a few years ago I have been period free for 4 months now im a few weeks off 50.

Mrsjayy · 11/04/2021 09:37

Obviously if you are worried see your Gp.

Bluntness100 · 11/04/2021 09:38

Yes mine were horrific, like I could feel it chugging out of me, not had a period for about three months now and even though my daughter was home (her periods habe always brought mine on) no periods. I’m. Fifty two.

SerafinaPekkala · 11/04/2021 09:40

I didn't want to deal with flooding everywhere so I went on the progesterone only pill. No periods, happy me.

SelkieBeag · 11/04/2021 09:43

Don't wait for 'time passing' to solve this.

I had this exact problem at 49, one month off 50. I nearly died of shock! I went to women's clinic and got put on tranexemic acid (?) in the short term to dry up the bleeding (that worked brilliantly) and then I got put on the progesterone only pill (Azalia) back to back, so I don't get periods at all now! Smile

I remember my mum still having periods well in to her fifties so I'll stay on Azalia for at least another year before I risk stopping it. They gave me a scan in the women's clinic before they prescribed it to me the first time just to check I didn't have fibroids and because I didn't they could give me the back to back pill.

Good luck!

I'm 51 and still going through massive flooding periods, which make me feel incredibly low. My iron levels are through the floor and it seems to have been going on for ages.
I can't take the pill as it causes me to have headaches, chloasma and I have had a couple of blood clot scares in the past.
I was prescribed tranexamic acid, which seemed to just delay the bleeding which would the come back with a vengeance...dragging out the whole thing even longer!
This month I've had huge clots, pain and feeling very negative, plus pains in my leg and an inflamed vein in my leg.
It is utter shit.

Fleetheart · 11/04/2021 09:49

I would go and see the GP. I had this.l also. T hey checked me out in case it was any thing else, gave me transansemic acid (also don’t know how to spell it), and then gave me the Mirena coil. It changed my life! The flooding was so awkward and debilitating (happened once as I was walking from a plane to the airport and I literally had to pigeon step until I could get to the loo). So see The doctor!

thesunwillout · 11/04/2021 09:50

Also recommend mini pill.
Cerazette has worked for me.

Pleasure · 11/04/2021 09:58

Glad I'm not the only one! I'll ring the GP this week to see what they can suggest. Thanks x

Another one saying aye to Tranexamic acid here - you start taking it from the day before your period, 3 times a day during. Definitely lightened the flow for me and therefore the pain. No side effects so I'm continuing. Much better than trying to manage flooding. GP said that once the lining of the womb had shed I was continuing bleeding and it's that the tablet stops. At first Gp just suggested I gave it a try - see your GP for defo - no need to continue suffering and I suspect you know that having posted on here. Take care x

HazeyJanell
I get the pains in my leg, I have varicose veins and they're agonising the week before I come on. Also awful pains in lower pelvic area which literally take my breath away. Eases off by the time I get to day 3 though.
The joys of being a woman 😂

Have you asked for a scan to check for fibroids? Your symptoms sound very similar to mine and they found several large fibroids. Have you had a blood test for anaemia too?

HazeyJaneII · 12/04/2021 18:56

I'm very glad of this thread, it's spurred me on to get some answers. I'm glad I'm not alone. Today I ended up calling the surgery because there was a huge flood of blood and clots, it was like a fucking Tarantino film...and this is after a week and a half of period. The nurse said to take Tranexamic Acid to try and curtail it, even though the other day they said to stop. I've got an appointment on Weds with GP.
I'm pretty sure this is my body's last fiesta before menopause stops my periods...but need to make sure it's nothing else, and get something to help because I can't have this every 2 weeks out of 4.

Thefamilybusiness · 12/04/2021 18:59

I'm the same, i. 48, still rebuking very heavy and painful. I get the pains down my legs too and in my pelvis, been like this about eight months now, hoping they'll stop soon.

selkiebeag · 12/04/2021 20:12

It is the body's last fiesta is right......., when they were checking me out to see if I had fibroids before I could get a prescription for mini pill, the scanner said to me ''oh you just ovulated''. I was shocked. I was pushing 50. I didn't think that was POSSIBLE.

@HazeyJaneII I'm half laughing (through some very painful memories) at your description of a Tarantino film! That's what it was like for me. I was walking home and it was February and dark, but if that'd happened an hour earlier at work [omg] I put my key in the door and there was another flood. My POOR daughter aged 17 was traumatised as well! so that was both of us! Had a large glass of wine that night, hoping it wouldn't kill me given there was no blood in my veins. But it didn't.

BearPear · 12/04/2021 20:13

Blimey, I’m 54 and had an incredibly heavy period a couple of months ago (big clots, flooding etc). I have had a light bleed this week but my last one started this way before the deluge. I wonder how much longer this will drag on!
