Thickening of endometrium

I’m 51- peri menopausal and been on HRT 2.5 years taking oestrogen daily and progesterone for 12 days of the cycle, Having been referred for irregular bleeding today I had a scan and lining was showing 12mm instead of the recommended 4. I have now been referred for a hysteroscopy and biopsy under a general as a day patient. I’m hoping it’s just a hormonal imbalance but scared that it may be something else, consultant seemed reassuring. Has anyone else experienced this and got any words of advice. Thanks

Hello Notarule, I have had this- twice. Both times thankfully things have been ok. I was asleep during the Hysteroscopy, on waking it's a little uncomfortable but I was offered painkillers. When I got home I managed fine on paracetamol and was ok after a sleep. If memory serves me regarding the biopsy I received a letter to say all was well. Honestly it may be nerve- wracking but you will be fine. When you are sleeping it gives the doctors a good chance to look around and make sure nothing sinister is there. I don't know the reason that it happened to me twice, I think I was just unlucky. It may have something to do with menopause as I was in my 50s, both times. Good luck for your procedure but honestly it's a very common situation and you will benefit from the peace of mind it gives you, rather than worrying. The medical staff are lovely. I suffer from terrible anxiety and they were all really kind to me.

Thanks gothichouse - that reassuring and so glad you were ok. I’m not so worried about the procedure as had loop diathermy and laser treatment years ago for abnormal cells and IVF so used to rummaging down there and investigations but I’m worried about them finding cancer. My sister was diagnosed with cervical cancer 2 years ago - she had the all clear now but that’s in my mind I also now need to self isolate as I’ll be going in to hospital which is frustrating as like you I get very anxious and usually help this by a good walk with the dog or a friend which I wont be able to do. I Aldi have to come off my HRT so worried how I’ll feel with this too and likely if all ok I’ll have to have mirina coil for the progesterone amd usually the 12 days of progesterone are my worse days

Understandable Notarule and given your sister's situation it can make you think the worst. Get a few wee treats in for after the procedure, a favourite DVD or a sweetie. Good luck with it all but honestly it will be ok. If there are things you are worried about tell the staff. Everyone is there to help you.

Hi, I’d be really interested to hear the outcome…I came off HRT a a month ago after I had a bleed whilst I was into taking progesterone vaginally. I’d been on it for about a year. I usually had a bleed when I’d finished the progesterone. Because I have a small ovarian cyst they sent me for another trans vaginal scan this week. Good news was that the cyst was gone but they noticed that the endometrium was 11mm and irregular with some calcification. I’m terrified!!! I’ve been to GP this morning for a blood test and seen another GP who explained their 2 week pathway and them being extra cautious. She’s explained I’ll be having a hysteroscopy and they take a biopsy. I feel fine being off HRT and am currently having a period. I was on day one of my period when they did the scan this week - do you think this affects your endometrium? Any help appreciated x
