HRT or not

My periods have become irregular (occasional extra ones and periods of just spotting. Probably started about 18 months ago but has ramped up since December, so I went to the GP and had blood tests which showed I am going through the change. Was surprised that it showed up as know it doesn't always. I had a phone chat with the GP today and he suggested either HRT or trying herbal supplements. I turned 46 in January. Symptoms aside from irregular periods and spotting include a bit of joint pain and increased anxiety and low mood (I can be prone to this anyway). Had things which could have been hot flushes but not sure, a bit of brain fog and generally feeling yuk sometimes. My Aunt (Mothers Sister) had breast cancer when she was 49 and was on HRT, cancer genes not good in our family. I have a busy life (dont we all), retraining in copywriting, self-employed, elderly Father (200 miles way but still very involved), teenage Sons. Any advice would be welcome.

The best thing if you have time is to work your way through these fact sheets on the website of Dr Louise Newson, and also the info on Menopause Matters (written by a gynae consultant.)

www.menopausedoctor.co.uk/resources/booklets-fact-sheets

On the positive side, you will see from the medical fact sheets and on Menopause Matters website that HRT before 51 (age of menopause on average) doesn't count in terms of added risk. This is because you are only supplementing your natural levels which you should have anyway for a few more years.

Obviously, it's your choice but you can read all about it here.
