I'm 47, no periods but no hot flashes

I think I'm late perimenopausal. Im only 47 but I've already been through quite a few years of short 21 day cycles with heavy periods and now my cycles have started to get longer and longer. I am now 78 days without one- each of the three periods I've missed I've had a little bit of spotting and cramping and pmt, but no period. I went to the gp just before lockdown last year to ask if it could be menopause or a thyroid problem - my other symptoms of lack of libido, hair thinning, and anaemia, seemed to me as if they could be related to my thyroid. Anyway my blood test results were normal for thyroid and I've not seen a Dr since so I'm still.in limbo. I'm.guessing this is it then. The menopause. But the weird thing is that I have no hot flashes. I had terrible brain fog a while.back but I feel ok now (once iron tablets had.kicked in) I generally feel ok apart from the above and a bit of.joint pain..
I just think I'm too young. I wasn't expecting it all to end till I was early.50s. my mum was 52. I suppose my question is does anyone just sail through it without needing HRT? And would it be better to ask for HRT anyway to help protect my.bones?.Would HRT start.my periods going again? (I must be weird because I like my periods, or cycles anyway). Sorry this is rambling..I'm.so confused about it all and I don't want to go back to the doctors in the current situation..many thanks for any advices

I'm through it all now. Probably started five years ago. Over two years now no periods. Never had a hot flush.

DramaAlpaca · 01/02/2021 00:26

Yes, I sailed through it without feeling the need for HRT. I didn't have hot flushes as such, just an overall increase in my body temperature.

I'm not even sure when I went through it. I had the Mirena coil put in at 46 and never had a period again. Yay! I had it taken out at 54 and I'm definitely out the other side.

As for HRT, I'm no expert as as I haven't taken it myself. You are on the younger side of normal for menopause and I know HRT is recommended if you go through it in your early 40s or earlier.

Have a look at the Menopause Matters website, there's lots of useful and up to date information there. If you decide to go down the HRT route it will help a lot if you are well informed and can talk to your GP with a good idea of what you need to ask for.

I started HRT a year post meno and never had a hot flush, i guess i could have had them since starting HRT and not noticed.

I went through it at the sane time. But the 12 months without a period just before my 48 birthday.

I had many dreadful symptoms but hit flushes have not been a significant one and didn't start until I was full blown in the menopause. Even then, I don't get them.much. I go through phases. At worse, I get one or two a day, at my best I'll go more than a week without one. They are not severe either.

Moirarose2021 · 02/02/2021 10:05

I'm similar, have no symptoms, apart from a week of very short lived hot flushes, always assumed I would take hrt but I don't know if I should when I don't have symptoms, keep thinking that this can't be it

Thanks.for.all.your replies. I'm.now 106 days without a period according to.my tracker. Going to read up on HRT. I am really fearful about bones but also scared of HRT as my mum had two huge ovarian cysts after being on HRT..I don't want to go to the doctors at the moment but I do feel a.bit at sea. I am always so average in everything. I really can't believe I am having the menopause at 47 ☹️

@Stillgoings 47 is a common age for peri menopause. The average age for periods stopping for good is 51. You might finds yours peter out over a few more years. Your mum and her ovarian cysts- there isn't any evidence that HRT causes ovarian cysts, so if your mum 'blamed' HRT that may not be true- she may have had the cysts anyway.. Cysts around peri meno are pretty common (and loads of women have cysts and never know about them, unless they get big.)

I have 2 friends that sailed through it, very envious of them!!

Passthecake30 · 04/04/2021 16:24

@Stillgoings I’ve not had a period for a year now, I’m 46. I also feel too young for this! I have some hot flushes but not too bad... and probably easier to manage as I’ve been working at home all year. I found magnesium ok has helped reduced them.

Stillgoings · 04/04/2021 17:16

Thanks for your replies. @passthecake30 will you go for HRT? I still don't know what to do. I will try some magnesium as have heard it's good from several people. I have actually just had a period at 136 days which really surprised me.but who knows when or if the next one will happen.

@Stillgoings I went to the doctor pre pandemic when my periods were up the spout (very heavy, huge gaps in between etc) and she didn’t seem bothered at all. She asked if my moods were affected, and I was fine then and I’m still fine. It seemed like I should only go back if I was emotionally affected? My mum has oesteoporis so not sure what to do. I’ve been taking additional calcium since I was about 30.
