HRT or not?

I’m 57 and we’ll through menopause. I seemed to sail through but have suddenly hit a wall. Headaches, thinning hair and insomnia. Vaginal dryness and low libido.

Would GP think I was mad to ask for HRT at this point? I have osteoporosis anyway ( due to a previous illness) so it would help with that.

Should I bother?

Certainly topical oestrogen cream/ pessaries would help enormously with the vaginal dryness. As for starting HRT at 57, I'd definitely discuss with your GP (there are other medications which may help with your osteoporosis, as I'm sure you're aware of).

Others more knowledgeable about starting HRT later may be along in a minute.

Thanks. I feel as if I’ve missed the boat really.

From what I understand, the menopause 'window' for taking HRT is approximately 10 years after menopause. So depending on when you hit menopause - if you are within the 10 years, you may be ok to start on HRT.

Watch Menopause Taylor on YouTube. She has over 200 videos all about menopause. There is one specifically about this.

You have plenty of time (fine to start before 60 and also after 60 if the dose is low to start with) but your biggest issue might be convincing your GP- shop around if you need to or find a private meno specialist if you hit a brick wall.

Are you taking medication for your osteoporosis anyway?
And did no one suggest HRT as well, as the time of diagnosis?
How long have you been post meno?

I was on meds for osteoporosis but you. And you only take them for 5 years. Yes someone should have suggested HRT at the time probably. Might make an appt. thanks all
