Is this the menopause/perimenopause?

I'm 48 and feel hot but I'm not having flushes of it but just feel hot like I have a fever. I have the windows open in December but am not sweating. I'm also emotional and feel like crying over the slightest thing. I have rage and irritability. It feels like really bad PMS.

Does that sound like the menopause? I have no idea.

I’m pretty much like that with peri.

username44416 · 13/12/2020 22:42

Hi thanks. Do I need to see my Dr? I don't know what to do or am I meant to ride this out?

helloxhristmas · 13/12/2020 22:42

Sounds like me, I need to sleep with the windows open. I'm 42.

username44416 · 13/12/2020 22:45

It's weird isn't it? I thought I was meant to have flushes of heat, like suddenly feel hot or I thought I was meant to sweat a lot but I just feel hot all the time. I didn't expect this at all.

I was like that when it first started. Completely broke down and sobbed for what felt like hours for no reason. Now I just go through times of feeling hot and then nothing for weeks - it's like my hormones go to sleep then wake up and are like 'ok, let's work again'. 10 months in now!

Aquamarine1029 · 13/12/2020 22:46

Definitely sounds like peri. HRT is amazing, so I would recommend you talk to your doctor about it. There's no reason to suffer like this.

DramaAlpaca · 13/12/2020 22:47

It sounds like classic perimenopause to me. You don't have to put up with these symptoms if they are making you miserable. Have a chat to your GP and discuss HRT with them. There's lots of info on this board if you scroll through it.

Honeyroar · 13/12/2020 22:47

At the minute I’m just riding it out. Waiting for it to get worse! I have some months that are worse than others.

username44416 · 13/12/2020 22:48

I'm realllllly bad with wanting to cry! It's ridiculous. Like watching an advert or reading something kind I'm just blubbing. I've also developed a sweet tooth and have never had one before. I need to watch my temper as well as I just suddenly rage.

Here's a good article op, and there are loads of other resources out there, too.

i.stuff.co.nz/life-style/well-good/teach-me/113666670/perimenopause-lead-up-to-menopause-very-uncomfortable-and-poorly-understood

Othering · 13/12/2020 22:51

There is no typical. Some women have 'dry hot flushes, some drip with sweat, some just feel constantly warmer and some have combinations of all and more!! Anxiety, mood swings, feeling flat, feeling in a rage etc. At your age and with those symptoms, then yes, it does sound like you're starting or are already in peri/menopause.

username44416 · 13/12/2020 22:51

Thanks for the article and responses. I don't have anyone I can ask about these things, no mum or anything. I think I'll make an appointment to chat with my Dr and see if she suggests anything.

Thanks for posting this. I am 48 and believe I'm in perimenopause, too. I haven't had hot flushes either (yet) but I am very irritable these day with little to no patience (I was always a little impatient but this off the charts), have noticed rage (building works going on daily across road NOT helping) and have also noticed a raised pulse rate. My sleep is also terrible, in that I find it hard to sleep even when I'm very tired. I'm also eating more than ever!!!

I'll be following this thread with interest. You arent alone, op.Flowers

tapdancingmum · 13/12/2020 23:58

Oh, forgot sleeping or not. Can be absolutely shattered, get into bed and nothing. Lie there for hours before getting back up and going down for a drink. Or, falling into a blissful sleep to be woken by a hot flush and either needing a wee or breakfast. The menopause munchies hit and I can't get back to sleep as I'm so hungry.

username44416 · 14/12/2020 12:01

My sleep is the same. Can't sleep even if I've had three hours the night before. I take magnesium and sometimes melatonin. I'm also waking up starving! It goes in cycles though as a few weeks ago I couldn't stop eating but now seem to be back to normal.

I was looking into Black Cohosh which is meant to be good for symptoms but will contact my Dr first. The heat I'm feeling is not unbearable, it just means I don't have to put the heating on unless it's really cold. I've only had the heating on twice so far.

Yes to very irritable. I'm trying not to snap at people and also very teary which is embarrassing.

Has anyone ever experienced smelly urine as a symptom of peri menopause / menopause? Blush

Londontown12 · 17/12/2020 10:42

I was exactly the same like a fever constantly!! And I wasn’t sleeping I’m on my 2nd month of HRT patches and I can actually feel the cold which I much prefer !!

username44416 · 18/12/2020 15:04

I spoke to my GP yesterday and she had a peri/menopause expert with her and we had a chat. I'm having blood tests done next week to rule out anything else (Vit D, B12 and a few others). They're not denying giving me HRT but want to see if anything else may be responsible for the symptoms.

@Emmenelle Smelly wee - no idea. Are you eating anything different or drinking enough fluids?

@Hairobsessed123 I'm glad it's brought your temperature down. I'm not having to put the heating on which is great.

I have fibro which is exacerbated by hormones, so I'm also in a lot of pain because my hormones are fluctuating.

Londontown12 · 18/12/2020 15:40

@Emmenelle peri menopause can cause urine infections and sometimes u don’t know u have them maybe that is causing u smelly wee x

username44416 · 02/02/2021 16:30

Ok so I had my blood test results back. Took a while then had to sort appointment to speak to my Dr.

Everything is normal. All the hormones etc and whatever the marker is used for tests to check, is normal. I had other things done as well like B12 and Vit D and everything is good.

She doesn't want to start me on treatment for HRT. I don't know where to go from here.

If I understand it correctly, the NICE guidelines (link on the top of the menopause forum) advise that menopause and peri menopause are not diagnosed with lab tests in over 45s if otherwise healthy.

I had a talk with my GP today who wants to do a FSH test (I’m 46) but I’m worried the result will be normal, because apparently the levels fluctuate so are not particularly reliable.

I am considering talking to another GP.

Don’t give up!

username44416 · 03/02/2021 21:31

My FSH was normal as well, that's what I meant by marker. Couldn't remember the name.

Thank you. She did say that it could be due to fluctuations. When I asked her why my face was glowing red, she said that she didn't know. The overall body heat has developed into my face flushing red.

I'm currently taking Starflower oil to help manage it but did say that I would contact her in a couple of months to check in and discuss again. I hope your tests go well.

As I wrote that message, @poshjock was giving similar advise on another thread, but saying it much better than I did. Follow her advice and go back to your GP armed with the NICE info!
