HRT - is my GP irresponsible?

I’ve been on the same dose HRT patches for about 6 years and am 52. They don’t seem to be working so well any more so I asked GP via email if they could give me a slightly stronger dose. I have borderline high blood pressure and have been told in the past by the first GP that prescribed it that there may be a link between HRT and increased bp. I said in my email to GP I would continue to
monitor my own bp. Collected the new prescription this morning and the dose has been doubled! From 50mcg per day to 100!

Could you perhaps arrange for a telephone consultation to talk to a GP about this?

NiceGerbil · 05/12/2020 23:32

You asked for a higher dose and they've given you a higher dose so now you're not happy?

Just give them a ring if you're concerned.

blacksax · 05/12/2020 23:39

They have done what you asked which was to increase the dose, so I'm not really sure what your problem is.

The tablets will only be manufactured in certain doses, and they've given you the next one up.

JamieLeeCurtains · 05/12/2020 23:47

There's a 75.

That's the normal next step.

QueenOfTheDoubleWide · 05/12/2020 23:50

Lots of HRT is still unavailable. Maybe they've gone to the 100s because the 75s are out of stock?

The OP said patches. Not tablets.

Evorel patches for example come in 25, 50, 75 and 100.

It is very unusual for a prescription strength to jump from 50 to 100.

But yes, ask the surgery to drop down to 75.

Don't bin the 100s. Given the shortages that could happen in early 2021, you might want to chop them in half at some point 😱

I got Evorel 75s yesterday, end date 2022. So the new batches are out there.

Cut a bit off the patch that’s what I do

I think I've read that's not advisable especially with the combined patches for half the month as you may be cutting off the progesterone element.
AllGongNoDinner · 06/12/2020 15:35

No mine are just oestrogen and the menopause consultant said it was fine and it has been for years now. I estimate 85mcg is perfect for me

Okay. But it's important to know that many patches aren't and it doesn't work to alter the ratio of estrogen: progestin by cutting them There are also 2 types of patch- matrix and reservoir.

In matrix the hormone is- I believe- distributed evenly across the patch . In reservoir, it's exactly that and cutting it could cause a lot to leak out.
