Hair loss.

I am losing quite a lot of hair, and have been for some time. I assume this is yet another menopausal symptom for me. I have started taking Nutrihair, a hair supplement, not had chance for it to kick in yet. I am hoping people might tell me that the hair loss comes to an end after menopause, or is that it now? Will it just continue to keep coming out from now on? TIA.

Have you had your thyroid checked? I think hair loss is one of the most common symptoms.

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 16/11/2020 15:08

My thyroid was ok about 12 months ago. I have read that hair loss is associated with menopause.

My hair, which was, and probably is still quite thick compared to other people's hair, is noticeably thinner post menopause Sad.

I kind of expected the hair on my head to thin, but I wasn't expecting my lady garden to disappear too! It hasn't quite disappeared, but you can see through it these days IFYWIM (I'm not a down there hair remover kind of person).

Hair on all other parts of my body is thicker and darker though, and I have hairs in places I've never had noticeable hair before - chin, top lip, nose...

It's bloody great getting older, isn't it!

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 16/11/2020 16:52

Yes, it's a PITA. Meanwhile the hairs on my chin and neck, if left unchecked, would make me look like Billy Goat Gruff...

@Nemeton I got my thyroid checked, thinking it might account for the weight issue, but not the case.

A loss of estrogen is usually the reason for hairloss in peri and post menopause. You can also get it if you are low in iron so worth having that tested.

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 16/11/2020 20:39

That's a point, thanks. I'll check if there's any iron in the supplement I have started taking.

Are you using any retinol skincare products? That can cause hair loss in some people. Just a thought. I'm in the same boat, hair loss wise, and know how depressing it can be - am peri menopausal too, though in my case I know what caused the hair loss.

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 18/11/2020 12:37

I use Clarins double serum, which I think may have retinol in it. I vaguely think the hair loss may have pre-dated that, but my menopausal itsn't wonderfully reliable tho. Good point tho. Thanks everyone for your thoughts/contributions. I had hoped someone would come along with a 'when I got through menopause, I went back to having hair like a mermaid' but by the nature of the board, we're all suffering still going through it!

Menopausal memory .... Doh. See what I mean? Hmm

I can say that on the two occasions previously that I lost hair, it did eventually fill in again. Eventually. Both times were after hormonal medication, as it this. I'm clinging on to that for dear life now, praying for the day that the shedding will slow down!

There's other things that can contribute to hair loss, such as iron deficiency and being deficient in the B vitamins. Have you had those things checked?

NonsensicalHair · 18/11/2020 21:20

How long has your hair loss being going on for, if you don't mind me asking?

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 19/11/2020 11:32

Nonsensicald, I would say about 9 months? Not sure...was in denial for quite a while I think. My B vits I hope are ok, as I take a reasonable supplement.

Hi I'm new to this forum. I too am experiencing a burning scalp and hair loss due to peri menopause. I've just turned 37, and I've been suffering with hair loss since April; during lockdown. I've just started HRT 2 weeks ago, so I'm hoping it will balance my hormones out in the next few months.

Has HRT improved your hair?
