HRT and bleeding

It’s been a while since I’ve posted.

I’ve been on kliofem for about 3.5 years now and had only had a yearly period for about 4 years before then.

Recently I’ve had some bleeding. The first was like a period. I had some symptoms, cramps and dark discharge for a couple of days.
Then a few weeks later, similar but not to same extent. Since then I’ve had a couple for spotting episodes. No side effects.

Do I need to go and get this checked?

Anyone else on kliofem? I have bad anxiety and wonder if a different hrt may be better for me?

Yes you absolutely must call your GP and have a consultation.
If I read this right you hadn't had a period at all on kliofem for several yrs?

PrudenceDear · 19/10/2020 21:13

No, no period for years.

13 months or so before starting kliofem, which was about 3.5 years ago now.

And before that periods were about 1 every 11-12 months.

I’m 48, if that makes a difference

One important thing- is Kliofem- the one you use- a bleed-free type or a continuous type where there is no monthly bleed?

You need to see your DR and probably have an ultrasound scan.

However, it sounds like you had an early menopause- possible a premature menopause (before 40) if your periods were so few and far between for years.

In some women with this- called POI - premature ovarian insufficiency- the ovaries can 'come back to life' again at times and you can ovulate.

But get it checked.

Worth getting it checked.

I’m a happy HRT user, but had bleeding going on for ten months on continuous HRT. My daughter came home when lockdown lifted and insisted I had it checked even though I wasn’t that worried, so I went for an ultrasound, followed by D&C and hysteroscopy. A benign polyp was biopsied but they also found precancerous cells. The latter have probably nothing to do with the HRT as I obviously take progesterone as well as estrogen. I may have some genetic issue. I am a slim and fit 56-year-old with two children, so don’t fit the risk profile, and the consultant was very surprised. I will have a hysterectomy. Again, my case is unusual, I want to stress.

Still on HRT!

You absolutely must ring your gp.
Post menopausal bleeding even if on hrt should be referred to gynaecology on a two week wait referral.
Please ring them today

Thanks for your advice.

Yes kliofem is continuous. It’s interesting you mention ovaries can come back to life.
I used to get really bad ovulation pains, especially as my periods finished. I’ve had some similar pains in recent months although more a dull ache now.

I will ring my gp tomorrow
