Last night I went to bed feeling tired and sleepy. Then after half an hour I couldn't sleep, had palpitations, fluttery feeling in my chest, couldn't relax, went from being too cold to too hot. I tried sleeping downstairs but just laid there for hours with all those symptoms. Eventually I did sleep but I've still woken with the a funny feeling like I had last night.
I have got a blood test next week to check my hormone levels as I have been having symptoms but does it sound like peri?

Palpitations that last all night? I'd be getting that checked out for more than peri!!

JaJaDingDong · 19/10/2020 07:48

Doesn't sound like my peri, although to be fair I didn't really have one.

I think I just feel anxious more than anything else.

It could be thyroid too! Similar symptoms. I have palpitations when my thyroxine is low.

It could be peri for sure. Feelings of anxiety, changes of temperature and insomnia are classic symptoms but if theyre proper palpatations, then I'd get checked out for sure.

I have the same symptoms when I have too much MSG. If I have Chinese or Thai takeaway my heart will race and flutter all night and I don't get a wink of sleep.

zafferana · 19/10/2020 08:14

If that is your only symptom OP then it's hard to tell. Heart palpitations should always be checked out by a GP, but they can also be a symptom of peri menopause. Are you having any other symptoms? Was it just this one night that you've had them or is this part of a pattern? Is there some reason you're feeling anxious? A blood test will not necessarily give you any answers (and is no longer recommended for diagnosing menopause), so be sure to discuss this with your GP.

I got really bad palpitations in peri. Went for a load of tests at the hospital includimg heart scans and had a 7 day heart rate monitor. They could find no cause for them so they put them down to peri. HRT have really helped and they are nothing like they were.

That sounds very similar to how I felt when peri ,good you've got a Dr appointment to check it all out. The lack of sleep and anxiety becomes a vicious circle in my experience.

This year I have had worse anxiety than normal. I've always suffered with it but it is definitely worse. Last night wasn't the first occasion of being unable to sleep and having palpitations it's happened a couple of times before. I also kept getting that feeling of being startled every time I started to doze off I kept jumping.

For reference i'm 43 and on the mini pill. My periods are irregular because of the pill so I don't know what my normal cycle is. Last night I felt fine until I went to bed to try to sleep. I take my pill just before I go to bed as well so I'm wondering if that's maybe caused it?

I've just spoken to a GP and he wants me to make an appointment for an ECG. He's calling me back tomorrow to see what my BP and heart rate is as I have just bought a blood pressure machine. If the readings are ok then he will think about prescribing me beta blockers.
He said how I'm feeling sounds like peri menopause but until I have bloods done obviously we won't know.
