Contraception choice at 49, looking ahead

I’ve only recently been reading this section, so still something of a beginner on the subject of the menopause! I need to likely switch my contraceptive method - been on the pill for many years, GP would prefer I came off, as my blood pressure is creeping up. I’m not showing any/many signs of peri menopause, overheating at night sometimes but nothing more. I’m keen to take HRT when the time comes, as I’m at higher risk of osteoporosis (long-standing low BMI, bone-related family history).

If I’ve read around this right, it seems to make sense for me to try the mirena coil now, initially for contraceptive, but with an eye on this being my supply of progesterone if I do end up with HRT? Does that seem sensible, anything I should be considering before I look to go down this route?

I have just decided against the coil in the short term and gone for the proestrogen only pill. I wanted the coil, but I was concerned that if it doesn’t suit me and we’re in lockdown then I won’t be able to have it removed. I know a few people really disagree with it. I’m planning to switch to the coil next year when things are more certain in terms of coronavirus.
