Describe your hot flushes to me

I've never really had a major problem with them up until now but this week I seem to be permanently hot while I'm on my period.

Like I’m standing in front of an oven.
It’s not the heat, it’s the sweating for me, it’s SO uncomfortable, embarrassing and I feel so dirty/disgusting all the time.

Walking into any building brings it on.

Interestingly this seems to be related to how stressed I am, it’s much worse when I’m stressed.

BooseysMom · 20/08/2020 22:40

Yes! I get these randomly now. Today was bliss though as I has the window wide open at work and there was a lovely breeze coming in. I don't have them so bad I have to shower though as some suffer with this.
I tend to wake at 4am all hot and sweaty but can usually go back to sleep otherwise I just get up. I'm getting more and more symptoms of peri now.
Do you have any other annoying symptoms?

crosser62 · 20/08/2020 22:46

Can’t sleep
Anxiety & suicidal thoughts (never had either of these in my life!)
Weight gain, impossible to shift.
Bloody rubbish.

BooseysMom · 20/08/2020 22:56

Yes agreed. I'm supposed to be starting HRT soon so we'll see what that does.

MummaPI · 20/08/2020 23:03

I have LOTS of symptoms, been in peri for 5 years. I've missed a period so this one is making me pay. I've been hot since the day I came on, rather than a hot flush. Need constant fresh air on me to feel remotely comfortable.

MummaPI · 20/08/2020 23:04

@BooseysMom 4am is my wake time too!

squanderedcore · 20/08/2020 23:06

I've only had a few classic hot flushes; with me it's like I just feel a bit hot and a bit sweaty the entire time. It's particularly crap in this humid weather.

BooseysMom · 20/08/2020 23:11

MummaPI [smile it wouldn't be too bad if it wasn't for all the horrible symptoms. I like early mornings as a rule but when I wake up I have a pounding heart, muscle fatigue and the hot flushes sometimes too. Also getting alot of weird dreams lately. Oh and a strange burning sensation down below on one side of my vagina. Sorry!

GisAFag · 20/08/2020 23:15

Open a very hot oven door and the heat and intensity is how I feel, last just over a minute.. I count. Red face, red chest.
Periods every 3 weeks now, heavy, nasty, don't ever feel clean. Hoping I don't stink!
God awful bad moods.. Why can't we just turn a switch and be done with all this. 8 years oeri6.. 8 years.. But last months been the worse ever.. Hoping I'm ebbing ever closer to no periods... God I can't wait. I'd take all the symptoms and not moan so much if they'd just stop

GisAFag · 20/08/2020 23:20

I have been more worried about everything over the past year or so. Eg ds (24) games online, him and his mates have been vocal.. Recently I dread him shouting and getting pissed off in a game - which we all do... I don't relax until he's laughing about something..... Bloody stupid I know

DramaAlpaca · 20/08/2020 23:24

I never flushed exactly, just felt like my inner body temperature went up a few degrees and I'd sweat more. It's eased off now I'm through it.

MummaPI · 20/08/2020 23:39

There's hope then! I know what you mean by worrying, plus everything seems so much more hard work nowadays

My flushes are really weird and horrible - they start around my shins and creep up my body until my face turns purple and I look like I’m about to expire. I actually thought I’d accidentally plugged in a heated blanket the other night, but no it was me. Dreams are intense and violent, with people trying to kill me and I wake up panicked or tearful.

DramaAlpaca · 20/08/2020 23:43

Gosh yes, the dreams! They can be quite intense and really scary. And I wake up all sweaty. Horrible.

tobee · 20/08/2020 23:48

I used to have panic attacks about 10 years ago which I thought I'd got over. Now I have sudden, physical surges of anxiety again. Intense but over in a minute. I'm 52. Does that sound menopause related? I've had a partial hysterectomy so can't tell! Sad

tobee · 20/08/2020 23:49

Maybe just Covid worries?

Allnamesaregone · 20/08/2020 23:51

No flushes here just a resetting of my body temp to a few degrees higher. 🥵
Still working out why I’m not losing weight if all these calories are going on heating my body!

Lua · 20/08/2020 23:51

It is like I am slepping nicely under my blanket and all of a sudden I am so hot I have to get rid of everything to cool off. Then 15 minutes later I am cold and need to find the cover again. Repeat every hour, and wake up exhausted in the morning... Sad

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 20/08/2020 23:53

I have two types, the first is just hot from the top of my chest upwards like I've opened a fan oven. The second is hot and every single sweat gland on my whole body pops out just one big bead of sweat, at the same time, in an instant. The second one is by far the more uncomfortable. They have been coming and going for the last 3 or 4 years, sometimes I have months without a flush of any kind, sometimes I have 20 in a day.

Periods are very unpredictable, sometimes 10 days apart, sometime 90 days apart. Fortunately they are generally much lighter than they used to be.

Sleep is also very variable, I sometimes sleep perfectly well and sometimes can't go to sleep for hours, and then wake up every hour or two throughout the night.

Also, I now have to use a fanjo wash and a moisturiser to keep the ph levels correct, so that I don't have an itchy fanjo. This brand which was recommended on here.

howells · 21/08/2020 00:01

Initially I noticed that I was just generally hotter, or at least I couldn’t regulate my temperature as well. So if I went into a hot room or had a hot meal/drink I would suddenly overheat, face would be burning etc. But I also seemed to feel the cold more. That went on for many years, while my periods were still regular-ish.

Then I had a long gap between periods (3 months) and I started having proper hot flushes. I get a feeling of extreme heat which seems to sweep up my face. I find I just have to strip off as many layers as possible. I get very sweaty, particularly on my forehead. After a minute or two it usually subsides, leaving me feeling a bit shivery because of the sweat. This would happen many times a day. Eventually I had a period and the flushes stopped for a while, but then I had another long gap and the flushes came back, so I decided to go on hrt.

I have been on hrt (Evorel Sequi and Novofem when the patches were unavailable) for 2 years now. At first it worked brilliantly, but now I feel as though it’s not quite controlling the symptoms so I think I may need a higher dose.

I found it really debillitating and embarrassing; it put me off going out/seeing friends/pursuing hobbies because I felt such a sweaty mess (not doing much of that at the moment anyway of course). It affects my sleep somewhat as well, but the daytime sweats were worse for me.

MummaPI · 21/08/2020 00:01

@tobee I think its hormone related as I'm the same and lots say that anxiety rises during perimenopause.

@Lua oh the night times...I feel your pain

OP posts:
Lua · 21/08/2020 00:32

OP, I went into hrt and the flushes mostly disappeared. A bit anxiety left behind, but generally feeling much better.

p.s. does the PI on your name stand for principal investigator?

MummaPI · 21/08/2020 00:54

Ha! No, but couldn't possibly tell you what it does stand for...Wink
