A period after almost 2 years

Bugger. I'd have been period free for 2 years in August but my body decided to start giving me premenstrual symptoms about 4 weeks ago, sore breasts, mood swings etc and today it seems I have a period.

Is this usual after so long? And does it mean that I might start getting them regularly again?

You need to speak to your GP if you get any bleeding after having none for 12 months.

How old are you?

In young women under 45, a resumption of cycles can happen.

In older women who are 50+ there is always concern if this happens and they will refer you for an urgent scan.

poppym12 · 05/06/2020 11:57

I'm 51.
Fortunately it seemed to be spotting rather than a proper period. The way I'd felt for the couple of weeks previously was exactly how I used to feel every month.
If any further bleeding occurs I'll contact my GP.

Thank you for your help.

see your gp. it's 2 years and you are 51.

I'd second what's already been said. Don't wait and see, make an appointment with your GP. You should always get bleeding checked out in this situation.

Call your GP. When this happened to me it was due to an ovarian cyst 5cm. Ovary removed and sent for cytology. All clear, fortunately.

Yes give your gp a call. My doctor told me that all unusual bleeds gets referred under the two week testing. In my case it was fibroids and I had to have surgery. All was ok. Good luck and don't worry.

poppym12 · 05/06/2020 22:02

You think I should ring even though I had typical pre menstrual symptoms so the spotting wasn't totally unexpected? Worried now Confused.

Yes, you need this investigated. the likelihood is that this was a late final period BUT the rule is any woman with bleeding - even one drop- more than 12 months after a period, has to be referred for a scan (at least) within 2 weeks.

Obviously as things stand now, you might not be seen so quickly.

Bleeding can be a late period, a polyp, vaginal atrophy, or, rarely, cancer of the endometrium and they need to rule that out.

It's a case of checking you ought to make sure it's nothing serious.

poppym12 · 05/06/2020 22:53

Thank you. I'll ring the surgery on Monday.

How did you get on OP?
I had bleeding about 7 months ago. All clear. Had it again last couple of days. Not much but have made an appointment.
