Spit, spit, spotting...

Hi - I'm in perimenopause. No other symptoms (aside from having no words..)but I've been having odd spotting, like the start of a period, every couple of weeks. Not on any drugs etc - been really lucky so far!!

Went to get it checked out and she said my cervix was fine but won't give me a smear as I had one last year and apparently it would be rejected... who knew.

Has anyone had any experienced of this? Am keeping a record but it's just like a pink smear on the loo paper every so often, sometimes a little bit of spotting. But every couple of weeks. Was always very regular with periods before this.

Spotting like this is usually due to no ovulation, so no progesterone is produced during your cycle, or and the lining can start to spot, or falling levels of progesterone. It depends if your periods are still regular. How old are you and how far into peri?

There are many other possible reasons for spotting, not just cervical cancer. This can be polyps on the cervix, small fibroids, etc but in most women with irregular cycles, it's just that.

The only way to diagnose it is for an internal scan but at the moment it's highly unlikely you will get that at outpatients, or a referral.

Thanks - I'm down to one period every 6 months or so. It was just because it's happening every couple of weeks and not every month.

I'm not too worried - just a niggle I thought I'd see if anyone had any experience of.

Thanks for your reply - very helpful!

I have had this recently, but have had a proper period at last (was getting paranoid my coil had failed!) my dr said it was common from mid 40's when I called a few weeks ago but booked me in for an exam (now postponed until June)

I went through a phase like this! It passed. Ah but it’s fun being a woman! Grin

I’m going through this on and off quite regularly. Spotty, short periods that drip on and on for weeks or full on floods every few months. Getting very bored of it!

Honeyroar. Mine are exactly the same, will spot for about 2 weeks then I’ll have 2 days of what I think will be a normal period then it stops, I can go 4 months without a period then out of the blue it comes back.
