Periods and peri menopause

Hi, I've just turned 40, had last child almost 2 years ago. My periods returned about a year ago much lighter and shorter but still about 28 day cycle.

I'm on CD 41 now and no sign of period despite pretty bad PMT symptoms. Definitely can't be pregnant - could this be the start of peri menopause? My only friend who has been through this says her periods got more frequent first. Doctor said I was too young (unhelpfully).

Any advice appreciated on whether this could be the start of peri. Is there anything I should do or just wait for period?
