Hello. So I went to the docs with my list of symptoms and she agreed very likely peri-menopause.

She then offered anti depressants as she couldn't offer anything else until I am either 50 or not had periods for 12 months.

Now I know from lovely Mumsnet I can fight this but what I want to know is HRT suitable for early stages or should I delay the fight till I'm further down the track. I am 47 and still getting a monthly period but it's much lighter and occasionally erratic in timing.

These are my main symptoms:
2 weeks of high anxiety and constant tears each month
Tiredness
Joint pain
Inability to retrieve words
Dioreah
Mild nausea

Oh the joys!!!

fluoxetine was a life saver for me. am on hrt now also but the anxiety was appalling. am also 47.

Argh !
Someone more knowledgeable than me will be able to tell you to get back to the GP and get HRT .
There is a great video on another thread. Read the things from BMS .

I’ve been on hrt since about 44/5, was still having periods. I was bleeding really heavily and erratically which was what triggered me to really push for

I hadn’t realised how anxious, depressed, angry, stressed and knackered I’d become. I was also getting night sweats where I was waking up every night like there’d been a flood.

Those symptoms were all my oestrogen falling as I was in peri menopause. HRT replaces those hormones. It put my life back together and saved my marriage.

I’m back to feeling like me.

Your GP is talking crap, you can take hrt when the symptoms start and carry on for ever.

The Menopause Doctor has loads of info

Out of interest, are you on the contraceptive pill? I have just been the GP with similar symptoms (she offered me antidepressants too and have been preparing to fight for HRT) but at the same time switched me from the combined pill to the mini pill as I was having visual migraines. My mood has improved so much that I don't think I need anything else at the minute. Worth a mention in case it helps. Good luck.

Your symptoms are classic peri and HRT is what you need to try. No need at all to wait. GP simply doesn't know about HRT!
There are 2 types of hrt- women still with periods and women without. Age has nothing to do with it. See another GP who knows the basics. Pretty appalling really.

Thank you all so much. I will do my research and go back to the gp.
