What should I do? I have missed all of my Progesterone doses this month.

I have just woken up and my boobs are really sore. Made me realise I’ve not had that symptom for ages then awful realisation I’ve forgotten all about taking my Utrogestan tablets this month. (I have been doing my Estrogen gel every day).

I am meant to take them days 15-26 of my cycle and it’s now day 27 and I have missed them all.

What should I do? Been on it 6 months and never forgotten one dose before let alone a whole cycle. Please help.

Can't you just start taking regular daily dose again? Isn't it nice that you didn't have any problems until now.

SurfingApple · 20/10/2019 08:27

It’s not a daily dose though.

The estrogen gel is daily (and I’ve done that)

The Utrogestan (progesterone) is to be taken 2 tablets each night days 15 - 26 of the cycle. I’ve not taken any of those and it’s now day 27.

My period (which is very short and light now) will come in a couple of days no matter what so do I wait until the next day 15 and just accept i have missed a whole month or should I do something else?

What did you decide to do? I've got a lovely practice nurse to ring if these sort of things happen. Lucky one at my practice knows a lot about HRT.
How have you found the gel otherwise ?

Ibizafun · 23/10/2019 23:06

I would go for an internal scan to make sure your lining hasn’t thickened due to the lack of progesterone.

SurfingApple · 24/10/2019 05:46

I decided to wait until the next cycle. My period has started so I have already set a reminder alarm for day 15. I am thinking that starting the tablets on the same date each month would be a better idea going forward rather than counting days of each cycle...

Do I really need a scan? Would just one month of missed progesterone have done that much damage?

No of course you don't need a scan.

Some types of HRT (Tridestra) is a 3- monthly cycle where the progestogen is only taken after 10 weeks.

The best way to work this if you are still having your own periods is to take it on the same say each month- like the 1st or the 15th.

Can't understand why you weren't told this by your dr.

No of course you don't need a scan. No dr would refer you for a scan on this basis.

Some types of HRT (Tridestra) is a 3- monthly cycle where the progestogen is only taken after 10 weeks.

The risks of hyperplasia are only relevant after long term use of estrogen only (like months and months usually.)

The best way to work this if you are still having your own periods is to take it on the same say each month- like the 1st or the 15th.

Sorry- IT issue didn't mean to post twice.

LuckyElle · 25/10/2019 21:31

@SurfingApple hi ,
Can I ask you why you take EstroGel and progesterone together?
I only take EstroGel pump.

JinglingHellsBells · 26/10/2019 08:08

@LuckyElle All women unless they have had a hysterextomy must take progesterone with estrogen. This is to prevent over growth of the womb lining.

The progesterone/ progestogen part can either be daily (continuous) or sequentially (10-12 days every month or sometimes slightly less often under medical supervision.)

Why are you using estrogen only?

LuckyElle · 26/10/2019 08:12

@JinglingHellsBells
My OB prescribed it to me when I told him my symptoms he did say to write him again after 2 weeks to see how I was .
I have been researching and as you say progesterone is needed.
Would also help me with my mental health ?
At extremely down ..

SurfingApple · 26/10/2019 15:47

Thanks Jingling.

I am not surprised my GP didn’t tell me. I had to go armed with tons of info to get this type of HRT. She’d never prescribed it before!

I’m now on day 4 of my cycle. Would it be ok then to do progesterone for 12 nights from 1st of each month? So 1st Nov, 1st Dec, 1st Jan etc irrespective of when my period is?

LucyElle. I know you don’t need me to answer now as PP has provided the relevant info. I read this and also gave my GP a copy. I highly recommend it.

I check Wink

JinglingHellsBells · 26/10/2019 17:48

@SurfingApple Yes that would be fine. You may end up with 2 bleeds in a month if your own cycle kicks in but in time you should sync together.

BTW the website of Dr Louise Newson is great for info (she's a menopause GP) and I've written on HRT and meno for the media as a health writer, so ask away if you have Qs.

Thank you.
