Injections to halt hormones & shrink fibroids pre hysterectomy

Hello,

Just wondering if anyone has had the hormone blocking injections which put you into temporary but immediate menopause? I’m booked into start three months of this ahead of a hysterectomy in order to try to shrink my massive fibroid before the surgery. Just looking for experiences of this in terms of effectiveness and also side effects (which I’m slightly dreading as my peri menopausal symptoms are bad enough!)

Also I’ve been given the option of keeping my cervix or having it removed with my uterus etc... advice on this greatly appreciated too.

🙏🏼

I can't advice on the injections, but I had my cervix removed in my hysterectomy and I haven't missed it. No more smear tests!

Is it Decapeptyl? I had it just once and it was fab. I had no hormone fluctuations or period or PMT symptoms for 6 weeks. I did have a few hot flushes at night mainly but they were a walk in the park compared to my usual monthly fun.

I had it before having fibroids removed. I had them removed and so all is well and normal since. I would have kept up the injections except they cost me €174 a month 😮 and that's subsidised. I think the doctor said it is around €500 a pop for a dose of Decapeptyl.

Thank you both so much for responding.

@ScreamingValenta the thought of no more smear tests is a definite plus point!

@SunnivaGunne it’s not decapeptyl, I think it’s called Prostap or something? Basically blocks oestrogen I believe. Or something!

I had the injections to treat PMDD every 12 weeks. They worked like magic with immediate relief from pmt symptoms. I did start getting some hot flushes and joint pain after about 12 months but I then switched to HRT and been much better.
