Could this be the menopause?

I've always been regular with a short cycle. Last year in March I had a very heavy period that soaked through a tampon and towel in an hour. Saw the dr who said to keep an eye on it and it stopped being heavy and returned to normal bleeding but lasted 2 weeks. Since then I've been regular until last month when I had pain worse than labour, heavy, but only for one day. This month I had an 8 day bleed, no bleeding for 5 days and am now bleeding again! I've felt sweatier then normal of late but I put it down to the weather as been so warm. Occasional night sweats. Grumpy and irritable. No energy or motivation. Very tired. Constant headaches. My youngest is finally stopping breastfeeding and is down to a very short bedtime feed and sometimes misses that feed altogether. I've got full on period pain today and feel queasy so not just random spotting. It's fresh blood and normal heaviness. I have an appointment on Friday with the GP. I'm 43. Not sexually active for over a year and 3 kids. My mum had a hysterectomy in her mid 40s as did other female family members so no idea when they would have naturally had their menopause.
Does this sound familiar?
