Doctors Appointment - what to expect, questions to ask etc

Hi,

I have been suffering for a while now with brain fog, anxiety, low energy, tiredness, tender boobs & mood swings. Not so much the hot flushes, I was getting these a few months ago but they seem to have evened out with the help of supplements. I haven't had a period for approx 1 year although this was expected due to having a mirena coil fitted

Am already feeling quite anxious about the appointment which is strange as it is with a prescribing nurse that specialises in menopause issues but i'm unsure what to expect.

Would appreciate some advice on what questions I should be asking please.

Maybe turn this round and ask yourself why you have made this appt?

What do you want to get out of the appt?

What questions have you written down to take with you?
What do you want to ask?
If it's just general questions, there is a wealth of info online on two menopause sites, written by specialist doctors.

It's up to you to be proactive and - TBH- the only reason to see a dr or nurse about menopause is to discuss medication which would usually be HRT. (Do not accept anti depressants as NICE has told drs not to offer these for meno. First line treatment is HRT.)

I do have a list of questions but don't know if there's anything I really need to ask that isn't obvious

what are the two menopause sites please?

Websites are Menopause Matters
and My Menopause Doctor

Both co.uk
Both written by a) a consultant gynae and b) GP with menopause specialism

This is a really good article about peri-menopause.

I was at the docs today too and got bloods taken so they can see if it's my thyroid or peri menopause.

I just want some drugs to make me feel normal again!!

Aquamarine1029 · 26/07/2019 16:59

@StoorieHoose

Blood levels are usually useless in diagnosing peri-menopause.

StoorieHoose · 26/07/2019 17:25

The doc did say that but want to rule out thyroid before giving me HRT :(

Aquamarine1029 · 26/07/2019 18:14

@StoorieHoose

That's sensible, but you can have issues caused by peri-menopause and your thyroid at the same time. HRT is a total lifesaver and it's really important for maintaining your bone density.
