Is this early menopause?

I'm 43. Periods always regular, never missed one. I have now missed two in a row. Have taken several pregnancy tests, all negative. Doctor has said that I need to wait until I've missed a third before they'll run some tests, namely a blood test to check FSH levels. I feel very bloated around my lower abdomen, occasionally some sort of pressure down there, loose stools and aching hips. Is this normal for the menopause? I was expecting years of notice with hot flushes etc not that my periods would just suddenly stop one day! Also slightly scared that it could be a pregnancy, although assume the tests I've done are reliable. Thanks

I'm sure the tests are accurate, be reassured that you're not pregnant (& make sure you do not become pregnant!). It might be the start of the perimenopausal phase but sometimes periods do stop suddenly, then start again. I remember at 43 I didn't have one for three months, it was when my mum died, but then they came back and were as before.

The pattern of menstruation often changes for no discernible reason. The bloated feeling is something people often get when their period is due.

Wait and see, if you miss another period your doctor will arrange blood tests for hormone levels after which you'll know one way or the other.

Thanks for your reassurance.

Do try not to dwell on it, easier said than done I know but if anything distracts you it will be good. It's amazing how the mind and bodily functions work.

Those symptoms don’t sound like menopause. More like you’re about to have your period. Periods do become irregular but you are young yet. Not everyone has hot flushes either.
