My periods have all gone a bit haywire in the past couple of years. I went from Nov 2017 to Feb 2018 with no period and then it restarted and was more or less back to normal for the rest of the year.

Then from Nov last year to Feb this year I had nothing except some very light (almost like end or beginning of period) bleeding in Dec. Around this time also had a few weeks where I'd randomly feel hot but this petered out.

After Feb I had 2 proper periods and another few days in May of bleeding like I did last Dec. Since then nothing except a few random days of blood-tinged discharge which come and go.

Last smear test was early last year and clear. I know spotting between periods can be a symptom of cervical cancer but this is spotting instead of periods.

I'm going to try and get a doctors appt for later this week but was wondering if anyone else had experienced the same? I'm 42 and I think my mum went through menopause around this age, but I don't have any other symptoms.

I would think so as well. Not every woman gets other noticeable symptoms. Possibly check with a GP as there are a few other things that can really mess with menstruation and major changes like those should probably be investigated, but my periods did really weird things like that - disappearing and then coming back and great variations between really light/practically spotting and short to long on-going ones - it's weird.

I've got an appointment with the GP tomorrow so I'll see what she says. I expect she may order another smear, which I won't relish (who does??) but if it's what needs to be done then so be it.

What are the things they can check to see if you're menopausal? Is it FSH? I assume this is done via a blood test.
