Posted on women's health but think this may be a better board for this, so apologies for duplicate posts X

Hi there
I'm just looking for some advice/support please. I'm 45 and the have struggled with mental health my whole life - both anxiety and depression. The past 7-8 years has been particularly horrendous and I've been resistant to ssri treatment.
I've moved recently and my new gp and I have been looking have if it's hormone relate as 2 weeks before my period my mood really drops and a couple of days before I literally want to die, I feel that dark. Also, they are so heavy and painful. I've had blood tests and one of my hormones has come back high, which may indicate the menopause. I'm seeing the GP next week and after speaking to her on the phone they are talking about Yazmin or HRT. I am so scared due to the risk of breast cancer but also cannot carrying living this awful life of despair. Please can you share your experiences please. Thank you X

I'm sure you will find lots of women on HRT for mood swings in peri menopause.

Don't worry about the risks. They don't apply to younger women anyway. Up to age 51 (age of average menopause) you are only supplementing what you ought to have. The BC risk is very small anyway (being overweight and drinking each night is a higher risk of BC.)

Thanks Jingling for your reply, it's very reassuring x

I am 43 and gone back on COCP (for contraception) in November. Risks are low if non smoking, not overwieght and not a heavy drinker.

I am 38 and take Yasmin for HRT reasons. (I have low oestrogen and Addison’s disease amongst other things). It’s been amazing for me, no side effects at all and I don’t have any of the menopausal symptoms I had before - anxiety, night sweats etc.

For me the risks of low oestrogen (heart issues, bone issues) outweighs the very small risk of blood clots etc. I have been on it for 5 years now.

Thanks ladies, it's good to know that you have had positive results. How long after taking did you notice a change? Many thanks x

Same for me. It didn’t take very long.

Fairylea · 26/04/2019 22:53

Meant to add I don’t have a gap between packets - my endocrinologist says this is okay. I just run them back to back as I have anaemia and having periods makes it worse.

Thanks Fairyland x

I would appreciate if there was any more input please. Everytime I mention hrt to people they say cancer and Yazmin too. You're damned if you do or don't. Thanks x

I was in the same boat! I was so terrified that my hrt due to my early meno will give me cancer cause almost everybody, my first gyn too, was against hrt. It is absolutely wrong! Get informed and try not to ask uninformed persons!
