Weird 8 day period

zzzz31 · 06/04/2019 20:53

I'm 47, think I'm in peri-menopause, cycles usually 26 days (for a few years) and periods light and only last a few days. This cycle has been different - 27 days (ok, no worries there) but tail end bleeding (brown-ish, sorry, TMI) for a a few days, then today suddenly had a bit of redder blood when wiped just now (8 day of period). Is this normal? For it almost to start up again, or at least still not be finished? Feel a bit anxious. It seems like it is part of the period, but odd it has gone red again and not happened before.

Anyone had a similar experience? TIA

Same here. I'm stalking this board at the minute trying to work out what's going on!
Two weeks late then 11 days of brown stringy stuff, three days of bleeding as normal and then back to the brown stringy stuff. This all started on March 20th!

TragicRabbit · 08/04/2019 08:14

I’ve just finished a 20 day period after a break of 38 days (I’m 48). From what I can ascertain this is the new normal (i.e. no such thing as normal). It’s all a bit shit really

JinglingHellsBells · 08/04/2019 13:07

I think it's normal. I had a stop-start thing for years. Would have normal flow for around 4-5 days, then it seemed to stop, then come back with a surprise for a day or two. It didn't occur to me to think of it as a problem, just my body changing slightly during peri.

zzzz31 · 08/04/2019 19:01

Thank you, everyone. That's all reassuring! Still going on a bit - more brown stuff day 10 now - I guess it is completely normal!

Was going to go to the docs with this to check all was OK but as I'm not in any pain do you think I should assume this is now my new normal ?

Ohnononono · 10/04/2019 18:28

Yes I have this too - period seems like it’s finished then suddenly starts up bright red again. I never make any assumptions now and carry sanpro at all times.... (I am 47 and definitely peri-menopausal)

Rowgtfc72 · 11/04/2019 04:29

On day 22 here. It's not heavy but never ending. Docs tomorrow if it's not stopped.

MountainPeakGeek · 11/04/2019 04:31

Exactly the same age and exactly the same thing the last couple of cycles here too...

Pandasarecute · 11/04/2019 07:32

I’m the same age and experienced the same! Cycles had gone shorter and I was bleeding for longer. GP sent me for a scan which showed womb and ovaries were fine so she suggested going on the mini pill as it had got that I was bleeding 4 weeks out of 6. For me that’s working for now

JinglingHellsBells · 11/04/2019 09:59

There's a big difference between a bleed going on for 8 days, stop and start, and those that last for weeks.

I posted a few threads down about Woman's Hour earlier week when they talked about heavy bleeds and a dr listed all the treatments. Well worth a listen on iPlayer if it's something you are having.

Rowgtfc72 · 11/04/2019 11:53

Pandasarecute I've been on the mini pill for 12 years. This is the first blip!
Jingling , might give that a listen.

Rowgtfc72 · 13/04/2019 07:13

Doc says its probably perimenopause . The mini pill can apparently go haywire too.
Took some swabs to rule out anything nasty as well. Should get those back next week.

ishestrange · 15/04/2019 17:13

I am experiencing similar so will join in!

Last period started Feb 8th, and went on for 15 days.

Not had one since but have had brown stringy stuff (not masses of it and only when I wipe, not every time I wipe either) for 5 days. I've felt as if there's been a period brewing but nothing has happened yet.

It's kind of scary because although it seems like it's the new normal, it could also be lots of much more sinister things!

stucknoue · 15/04/2019 17:19

Same here, lovely hot flushes too at night. Even got the h wanting to leave for a younger model, I'm a walking cliche.

IncrediblySadToo · 15/04/2019 17:23

Mine are all over the place, from the distance apart, to the length they last and everything in between. Every possible combination of light/heavy/short/long/stopping/starting...

The ONLY thing they are NOT is consistent.

Rowgtfc72 · 15/04/2019 17:48

ishestrange my exact symptons but now 26 days in. And that's why I went to the doc too.

ishestrange · 16/04/2019 10:11

I went to the doc today and she did an internal examination with a speculum. She said my cervix looked healthy. I suppose that was my main worry.

She also did blood tests for hormones, thyroid and full blood count (because they always do a full blood count). And referred me for an ultrasound (an internal one, I think). She was very thorough but she did say not to worry. It is difficult not to, though, isn't it!

Rowgtfc72 · 16/04/2019 11:38

I've had no results today so should be tomorrow. Still got the weird stringy spotting. 26 days in now and my next period is due tomorrow!

ishestrange · 17/04/2019 22:05

@Rowgtfc72 I hope your results were okay?

Rowgtfc72 · 18/04/2019 04:16

Not heard anything yet. Nurse said if I hadn't heard anything by Friday to assume all was OK but to ring and check anyway.
It all seemed to stop at teatime yesterday although little concerned as my period is due today!

Have you had results back yet?

CalmConfident · 18/04/2019 04:54

I have had this too...and a bout of “tired all the time” and weight gain. Doc very thorough, had bloods done and internal ultrasound. All cane back normal which was good news, cycle has now settled down again but very light..

CalmConfident · 18/04/2019 04:55

It was just a bit wierd!

ishestrange · 18/04/2019 16:40

I have had results back, and they said high FSH and LH indicate probably menopause or perimenopause (not really sure of the difference).

The doctor suggested HRT. I am not keen on this because of the cancer risk and the only symptom (apart from some mood swings!) is the periods really. I can deal with that.

But she did talk about wanting to protect my bones so she is going to look into a bone calculator and bone density scan to see how my bones are at the moment. Really impressed with how thorough she is being. She said calcium supplements might be an option. I think I would prefer this. I feel weird about HRT. I took it for 10 days or so as part of an IVF cycle a few years ago and it just made me feel really moody!

Rowgtfc72 · 18/04/2019 20:00

Wow that was thorough. Is that nhs? Hrt sounds a bit previous to me but definitely right to keep an eye on bone density.

No bloods done here she just said most probably perimenopause as I have the symptons and am the right age.
Rang the doc for swab results, aside from not being pregnant I don't have infection nor do I have gonorrhoea! !

Still waiting on the hpv test that should be next week.

My spotting is barely there now but my period was due yesterday so don't know what to expect.

CalmConfident the tiredness is the same as the first three months of pregnancy. By the end of my shift I just want to sit on the floor and not move again.

CalmConfident · 18/04/2019 21:15

I was fretting I was pregnant at one point too...irregular cycle aka “late”...and that weird metallic taste and big boobs...defo crazy hormone stuff!
