My hair smells

I wash it every other day, it's got a nasty musty smell. Anyone else?

Could it be time to change shampoo and conditioner?
Why don't they make perfume for hair?!? I find the only stuff that the smell lingers is coconut.

jayho · 26/03/2019 03:09

Sooooo glad it isn't just me! Memo-insomnia means I'm awake right now btw.......

I stopped taking hrt six weeks ago and the night sweats have returned. Despite washing my hair every day, I found that the roots were starting to get a bit greasy, something that I’ve not had since I was a teenager
I’ve swapped to solid shampoo and conditioner bars. My hair feels much cleaner and swisher plus the smell lasts. Maybe try that and then dry shampoo in between

zoellafortitude · 26/03/2019 08:51

I have had this. Drove me crazy. Eventually fixed it by using dandruff/medicated shampoos. They can be drying though, so extra-moisturising conditioner may be needed.

I also switched to soap bars for my body instead of shower gels - try Cidal (love that one!) or Shield medicated soaps. Feel I am getting much fresher with those.

azulmariposa They do make hair perfume though look Smile

Me too I'm a wreck. I have sleep apnoea so am knackered in the morning and sweat all night and smell really awful in the morning. I hate washing my hair every morning because it's so long. Nothing worse than waking up soaking wet and having to change all the sheets too.

zoellafortitude · 26/03/2019 09:14

Between my boobs I notice a smell sometimes, it doesn`t help that they are stuck in a bra all day

Had this too! Try a lift-and-separate style bra. All cotton if possible. Cotton tops too. Heavy-duty anti-perspirant between breasts after washing with medicated soap.

The misery does pass, I promise!

Tawdrylocalbrouhaha · 26/03/2019 09:17

Try a coal tar or selenium based shampoo, in case it is yeast based.

Why are you all suffering? HRT is there to help.

I started on HRT 11 years ago after 6 months of flushes, insomnia and do on, and haven't looked back since.
Even if you only use it short term it can help get you back to normal-ish for those years.

Birdie6 · 26/03/2019 11:14

Night sweats will disappear if you go on HRT. I haven't had one since I started on it . It helps with all the horrible menopausal symptoms, and makes life so much more doable ! I'd see about getting on HRT if I were you.

Marylou2 · 26/03/2019 11:21

What shampoo and conditioner are you using OP? My DD used Elvive for a while and quite frankly it stank.

It comes with risks and menopause is a natural phenomenon as is menarche.

Some women suffer really, really badly but I don't think my symptoms warranted being on HRT. I don't know, really.

I am on a ton of meds for autoimmune disease already. Just didn't fancy adding HRT on too.

jayho · 26/03/2019 11:37

Thanks all. I use Philip Kingsley dry flaky scalp shampoo and conditioner. I'm prone to eczema and it's the best I've found but willing to try alternatives

I'm only mentioning it as many women seem not to make the connection between thinking about HRT and suffering horrible often long term symptoms.

There are as many if not more risks in not using HRT.

The argument it's 'natural' - well so is cancer, the plague, all diseases. Doesn't mean we don't alleviate the symptoms or make use of modern scence.

(And yes you can die from the effects of the menopause. More women die from osteoporosis than cancer each year.)

Sodthis4agameofsoldiers · 26/03/2019 14:13

I've noticed I smell different too, last time I noticed a change was when I was pregnant but this smell is different.- kind of fusty. I thought I was being weird but obviously it's a menopause thing. I asked my partner if he could smell it but he couldn't and looked at me a bit strangely - he's had to deal with my flushes, night sweats and godawful mood swings, tearfulness and depression just lately too though Hmm.

justasking111 · 26/03/2019 20:07

I chose not to use HRT because my grandmother, DM and her sister all had breast cancer. I do use soap rather than shower gel which I think helps.
