I'm 44 and perimenopausal as confirmed by blood test, I was having hot flushes and other symptoms but they have now subsided. I have not had a period since end of August then on 14th Jan started bleeding and I'm still having a heavy period. I'm bloated and uncomfortable but not in any pain as such. Is this normal for peri menopause as although I've had other symptoms I've never had a period like this.

Just bumping this thread, hopefully someone can give me some advise. Feel like I'm never away from doctors these days with chest infection / sinus problems and now this. If it sounds pretty normal I won't bother going to see my doctor. Periods faded now come back again Confused

It's normal but not nice.

The reason for the long bleed is you are getting rid of a build up of the lining which has been going on since August; your cycles haven' t been regular enough to trigger a period (some will be without ovulation).

Your GP can give you drugs like Tranexamic acid to take before and during a period to help slow the blood loss.
You can also take Ibuprofen 3 x a day which will help.

You could also think about HRT which would help re-set your cycles eventually, into a monthly pattern, with a regular bleed (not a natural period) each month.
At 44 you are quite young for this- advice now is that if periods stop before 47, consider HRT because women with early menopause are more at risk from osteoporosis and heart disease.

You could also think about the Mirena coil which is a treatment for heavy periods during peri.

You def need to see your dr and be tested for your iron levels too if you are losing a lot of blood.

Is that a PCOS thing? None for months than almighty flood?

JinglingHellsBells · 26/01/2019 12:20

It's usually a meno thing unless it's been there for decades.

Thanks for your advice and yes it all makes sense. When I say heavy I don't really mean flooding as I'm always quite light and on for 3 days then that's it. This time I've obviously been on much longer and only when I wipe I see lots of bright red fresh blood. It did go brown (old blood) but has come back red. I did have a scan around October and everything was normal. It just seems never ending Sad

I've got a doctors appointment in the morning, I'm having major cramps today even after taking Ibuprofen Sad. I just want to leave work and jump in a hot bath, feel like a teenager again starting my periods. Hopefully they can give me something to regulate them and treat the pain. I'm in agony!! SadSadSad
