Anyone tried Premarin or should I ask for something different?

I cannot wait to start hrt I’ll be honest with you. I just went for my post op check up. My consultant has a good reputation. He left one ovary he said yes to Oestrogen hrt said he rates it and the new research for someone at 50 has good outcomes he told me the side affects and left his registrar to prescribe it. She asked me what I wanted and, as it was a last minute appointment, I was thrown. She’s started me on Premarin which wasn’t in stock in the pharmacy so I have to go back to my go and get it rewritten. Any thoughts?

can you fill in the gaps a little? what kind of op did you have and why?

Premarin is an old type of HRT made with synthetic estrogen from horse urine. I'd not touch it. There are far better types made from plants - in fact almost all types except those whose name starts with Pre-.

If you are on estrogen only HRT following a hysterctomy, it would be safer long term to use estrogen gel or a patch rather than tablets.

He wrote on the notes 1-3 years. Total abdo leaving one ovary left. Sorry i was rushing to another appointment. My gp is quite anti hrt which is why i was pleased he supported it fully. Now i just wished when the doctor was going through theBNF i couldve suggested the name of a good one. Whats wrong with tablets? Im already in the routine of oral Thyroxine and BP meds i thought ot would be easier to carry on with tablets.

I would urge you to look at the production of the pre hrt types. They really should have been banned by now given there are better alternatives that are produced without cruelty.

They should be able to prescribe you a really good alternative that doesn't use pmu if you ask for it Smile

Can you give me a name? Im sure all i have to do us get my prescription changed. My GP isnt a fan but i can drop my hospital prescription in and hope another doctor will pick it up.

Femoston 1/10 or Femoston on 2/10 this has been a godsend to me. You take it continuously without a break. Good luck x

Isn’t that dual though? I only need oestrogen they said.

you haven't said what your op was and why! (Just guessing here..!)

what's the 1-3 years about??

If that is the time you can have HRT that's not right.

Pills are more likely to cause blood clots though the risk is still tiny, as long as you arne't a smoker. (Doesn't apply to other drugs.)

Have a good read of the website Menopause Matters- all type s of HRT are under TREATMENTS and also the website of My Menopause Doctor ( dr Louise Newson.)

Sorry I thought I said total abdo hysterectomy leaving one ovary for testosterone he said. I think the 1-3 years was like a trial to see how it goes. I only got told this morning there was a cancellation so was totally off guard. I just knew I couldn’t cope with the aching joints, flushes and brain fog for much longer. It’s diffic as I’m hypothyroid as well and the symptoms are the same

I rang the go who told me to leave the prescription tomorrow with a note on It saying what I wanted
