Period or Spotting?

I'm 49. Until recently I had pretty regular periods - a few short/long cycles over the past few years but nothing major. I had my last 'full on' period in early June. Then, in mid-July I had several days of brownish, gloopy spotting which I thought was going to develop into a full period but never did. A few days ago the same thing happened and then on Saturday, I had fairly heavy flow which defiitely looked like the start of a period. It continued for several hours but stopped overnight, only to start again yesterday morning. And then, normal period flow a few hours before stopping once again. Nothing since yesterday afternoon - no cramping either.

Has anyone else experienced this in peri? And is this flow a real period, or 'just' spotting? Any answers appreciated.

when my periods were fizzling out they lasted only a couple of days and were very light. I was lucky never to have flooding or heavy periods. My cycles got shorter too- one was 17 days. But I was pretty lucky with the periods really, I only missed one, had a run of normal ones, then missed four, then a light one and that was more or less it. I did have a couple of episodes of really light spotting many months later (by when I was 53.)

Spotting is just that- really light spotting too light for a pad etc .More like a slightly bloody discharge.

It happens in between cycles or all the time, and what you have sounds like a period that is all over the place.

Thanks for the reply.

Guess what? Since I posted it's started again! And this time bright red flow (sorry for TMI but I guess it's that sort of discussion!) so would seem to be deffo a period, albeit an annoying erratic one.

I read somewhere that periods that stop and start like this can be a sign of low progesterone. I wonder if that's true?

Thanks also, I was just about to post a similar question!..I usually start light and then flood, but the flood didn't happen this's time and I was wondering if that was at all normal. I had read on here before about shorter or longer cycles but nothing about flow rate change.
