Help with progesterone use

I was put onto FemSeven Sequi by my gp which mean't I had 1.5mg of levonorgestrel in the patch for the last 2 weeks of my cycle - it says it releases 10 micrograms per 24 hours.

I went to a private gp who specialises in meno and she prescribed 100mg of Utrogestan for 25 days of the month.

Reading other threads on here it would appear that I don't actually need the Utrogestan continuously if I was having regular periods (which I was).

I have emailed her to ask her if I really should be taking it for 25 days but think she might be on holiday and I am about to come up to day 25 when I should stop.

My question is should I start it again after the 5 day break or wait until day 14 by which time she might be back from holiday and should answer. I am also confused about the dosage as the patch says 10 micrograms but the Utrogestan is 100mg per day.

I have seen no threads on here saying that.

HRT without progesterone is not licensed ( or safe) except if you have had a hysterectomy. If you add extra estrogen to your body you need extra progesterone to counteract its effects on the womb lining.

You can't compare patch dose and other forms of HRT.

However, you have been put on a continuous cycle with 25 days. The regime for women in peri is sequential to give a bleed. The dose is 200mgs x 14 days ( you can reduce to 10 or 12 if you have side effects). The dose for 25 days is 100mgs.

On a 25 day cycle you would start again after 3 days, not 5. (Giving a 28 day cycle.)

You don't need it continuously but you do need it!

Thanks Queen - I read the following from you on the Testosterone thread. This made me question why I had been put on it for 25 days. I am not questioning whether I need it only the time I would need it.

why are you using Utrogestan for 24 days a cycle? That is the (almost) equivalent of continuous HRT which is for women who are 12 months post-menopause. You ought to be (more usual) using it for 12-14 days a month only. Was it a typo?

If it's NOT a typo and you are on it 24 days it could well be causing you to feel tired- it has a sedative effect.

yes, sorry I realised after my post that you weren't questioning it per se but the number of days.

I don't understand some drs. The info for Utrogestan gives 2 different regimes

The recommended dose is 200 mg daily at bedtime, for twelve days in the last half of each therapeutic cycle (beginning on Day 15 of the cycle and ending on Day 26). Withdrawal bleeding may occur in the following week.

Alternatively 100 mg can be given at bedtime from Day 1 to Day 25 of each therapeutic cycle, withdrawal bleeding being less with this treatment schedule

I wonder if the confusion has come about because the 200mgs are no longer available so they don't get that 100mgs x 2 tablets is still the dose?.

Ahh okay understood.

If 25 days is fine, I will carry on with that as that is what she prescribed - but was confused because of that comment on that other thread and I had read something similar elsewhere.

I wonder if I doubled the dose for 12 days would I feel more tired on the days that I had double compared to the days I had nothing or the days where I had on the 100mg for most of the month.

I guess I will wait and see Grin how I feel on the regime she has put me on and go from there.
