If your under 50 does a women need to go 1 or 2 years without a period to be considered postmenopausal?

It's a year whatever your age.

some women who have POI (premature ovarian insufficiency in their 30s or early 40s) may find their periods stop and start again so they are slightly different.

Maybe confusing it with the contraception rule? Use contraception for 2 years if periods stop before 50, 1 year after 50.

That's not the same as saying you are only post meno under 50 after 2 years with no period. it's allowing for the fact that SOME women in their early - mid 40s can have a late burst of ovarian activity, so it's being on the safe side re. pregnancy.
