Depression after period starts anyone?

Hi I don’t know if I’m posting in the right place but thought people on here may know more about hormones?!
I have struggled since having my daughter nearly 2 years ago. I’ve been given countless anti depressants which haven’t helped and after months of tracking my cycle it’s so very clear my symptoms are cyclical!
My period ranges from 24-31 day cycle.
I seem to be affected by the larger hormonal fluctuations in your cycle. The obvious stress, irritability, anger in the 1.5 weeks prior to my period when progesterone is rising higher.

However my absolute worst times start after my period has begun on about day 5-8 of my cycle with one of those days being non functioning. Teary, very depressed, hopeless, very bleak. I can’t go on like this every month.

Tried a combined pill which made me more depressed and bordering suicidal. Gyno tried Esmya which is a progesterone blocker which again caused severe depression.

I take B6, starflower and calcium.

Help!!! Xx

Are you in peri Ceetee? Have you tested your hormones? Maybe there are other psychological causes for your depression?

Ceetee23 · 22/03/2018 20:24

I don’t know. I’m 39. My doctor checked my hormone levels via a blood test but apparently normal. She said what I experience once my period has started is because oestrogen is rising again so another big hormonal fluctuation. It only lasts about 3 days with one being particularly bad then I feel normal again.

Doc is taking about Mirena and poss oestrogen patches to prevent ovulation

It’s sounds good idea for me and it can help to stabilize your hormones. Taking antidepressants isn’t the solution and try to avoid that kind of medication if you haven’t clinical depression and your symptoms are due to hormonal fluctuations.

I agree. And Thankyou for replying. I’m on 10mg citalopram at the mo which I was put on after the combined pill debacle but we are looking to wean off that in the coming months as I just don’t have clinical depression. I had post natal depression after both my kids in the last 6 years. Both times it came on overnight after 2 weeks - again a hormonal cause I think.
I just can’t go through this each month. Does anyone have experience of Mirena and oestrogen in a patch or gel and had benefit? Or any other solutions?

Hope you feel better soon! I have no experience with Mirena, my gyn suggested it but I prefer pills. I’m on hrt, cyclical type.

Ceetee23 · 22/03/2018 20:56

What do you mean by cyclical type? I’m new to HRT etc x

I’m at different stage from you, I’m in peri and cyclical type means that I have period every month. It’s not a real period, it caused by the hormones in hrt.
