Is it possible to get pregnant in perimenopause?

I'm 41 and have two dc (ages 4 and 3).

My periods have gradually petered out over the last two years (two short periods since last summer). Hormone tests show I'm entering the menopause. I feel great - hasn't brought any problems or differences yet.

We've never used contraception (married)... we're not ttc but would welcome another baby.

Just wondering if it physically possible to get pregnant at this stage?

Thank you.

Yes guidelines are if you are under 50 you should use contraception for 2 years after your last period to avoid pregnancy.

However your chances are obviously slim and unfortunately if you were to get pregnant you have a higher risk of miscarriages, Down's syndrome and complications etc.

Definitely not impossible though!

Technically it’s possible but likely much more difficult for several reasons:

  • you are likely to be ovulating less- possibly not very often. If you’ve only had 2 periods in the last year that suggests you’ve only ovulated a few times
  • egg quality is a problem at 40 onwards
  • egg numbers are dwindling

I suppose it doesn’t matter if you’re not trying though?

As above- yes the miscarriage risk is much greater due to the chances of the egg being not chromosomally sound.

Yes of course you can! many women have their first child at 41.
You may find your periods resume and become more regular after this blip.

The oldest recorded natural birth in the UK was to a woman of 56.

We realease more eggs when we are approaching menopause
Aged 17-25 I had to have fertility treatment for my eldest
Aged 44 I fell pregnant tried for baby after 9 years of Mirena coil after trying for just 3 months
Sadly I lost one baby then fell 2 weeks later for twins caught sepia lost butt by 5 months pregnant
Then kept hemorghing so had to have Mirena back

I’d not risk it tbh looking at my history of infertility then bam
