When did you start the menopause?
Hmm

If you mean final period rather than peri symptoms, almost 53.

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 05/02/2018 18:27

Ok peri symptoms...?

DramaAlpaca · 05/02/2018 18:29

I started noticing peri symptoms at 44.

yummycake123 · 05/02/2018 18:44

Following... I'm 44, was asking myself the same question...
Drama What were your first symptoms if you don't mind me asking?

PollyPerky · 05/02/2018 18:44

I had some midcycle spotting when I was about 49 for a couple of cycles then nothing more till 51.

Superjaggy · 05/02/2018 18:51

I'd say 44 too. First signs were my very regular cycle going to pot, then within a year I started having hot flushes at night. Started HRT a few months after the flushes started and haven't looked back. I still get the odd overnight flush as I get towards the end of a pack (so during the progestogen phase) but it's bearable. I'm 46 now.

lljkk · 05/02/2018 19:01

I'm 50 & don't seem to have started Peri yet.
I do have "signs of getting older." DH seems to get the exact same things at same sort of age, so I don't think I can count any of those things as Peri.

My insomnia may be getting worse... it seems to have been on a trajectory of getting steadily worse since I was 15, though. So don't think I can count that, either.

DramaAlpaca · 05/02/2018 19:03

My cycle went from being 28 days exactly to being very irregular. I could have anything from three weeks to six weeks between periods. They also got much heavier & lasted longer.

I eventually saw my GP & got a Mirena coil at 46 which stopped my periods completely. Best thing ever.

My only other symptom has been a change in body temperature. No flushes, just constantly too warm. That's mostly tailed off now, thank goodness. I'm 53, my Mirena is still in, and I have no idea whether I've reached the menopause or not because I haven't had a period since I got it.

Emerald13 · 05/02/2018 21:25

I started my peri at 41, now 42 and on hrt. My periods were regular but lighter. I hope I’ll stay on it the longer I can.

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 06/02/2018 21:16

So insinia, irregular periods & hot flushes. Is that all the symptoms?

When you say hot flushes, it's not just like a "I'm hot & can't sleep because I drank too much wine" kind of feeling is it?

Whet about aches & pains? Are they part of it?

I'm early 40's here & periods still regular. I can't get my head round having a coil fitted.

I noticed my cycle going a bit haywire at 42/3; I'm nearly 46 & they are definitely erratic; last month was 28 days exactly - I'm now spotting on day 13 Hmmand the one before that was about 20 days. They seem to be getting closer together & heavier.

Also noticing more of a central fat distribution Confused but no hot flushes, insomnia or achy joints (yet).

BlessYourCottonSocks · 06/02/2018 21:28

No symptoms til periods stopped at 50. (Same month as my birthday!) After that I got flushes - every 40 mins or so through the night...waking up with what I can only describe as a 'feeling of impending doom' with my heart racing in panic. Lying there thinking, 'oh God what's happening' and then feeling heat starting in my core (like a too hot coffee) and radiating outwards. Throwing the covers off, peeling clothes off and then 10 minutes of pounding heart, panic, pouring with sweat. After that I would be aware that I was shivering with cold and start telling myself I was ok. Pull the covers back on and try to sleep again. Awake 40 mins later for the same cycle. Bloody exhausting.

Difficult to tell about aches and pains - I just feel old! And knackered (cos I've not slept well). Like PP, generally feel too warm when I always used to feel the cold.

GP prescribed Catapres tablets which are for high BP - but have worked with menopausal women in cutting hot flushes. They seem to have worked. Still feel hot/warm in the daytime, but nothing like it was for months.

51 now, have had one HUGE period from hell about 4 months ago. Flooding through super tampon/super pad every hour for about 5 days. Hormonal, tired and weepy - but that was probably lack of sleep. (or the teaching of teenagers that I do). Feel ok now.

falang · 06/02/2018 21:33

I didn't really notice much. I got very heavy periods for a while but no hot flushes or anything else. Skin and hair changes, both more dry, but that's been about it really. Had one period out of the blue 2 years ago and nothing since. I think I've been lucky.
