Spotting in peri menopause - what's normal?

I'm 44. For the past few years my periods have been erratic. Very heavy one month, then no period for a few months etc.

In the past 12 months I have had two periods, in Dec and January. No period at all for a few months precious to those. Since then, (in the last 8 months) I have had no real period, just occasional spotting. Is this normal for perimenopause or is it something to be worried about?

My periods have become weirdly drawn out so not sure if I'm spotting or if it could just be the slow beginning of a period which takes days to come on. GP wanted me to go in for an examination and blood test. I appreciate that I may be in a different place hormone-wise as I am still getting monthly periods but doctors do seem to want to check out any spotting. I suspect it is usually not sinister and just part of the process but best to tell your GP so if need be they can exclude any other causes.
