Stopping hrt due to surgery

I broke my ankle12 days ago and had to have an op to insert a metal plate. All the Drs I spoke to advised me to stop taking elleste duet 1mg due to the risk of deep vein thrombosis whilst in hospital and also convalescing. So I have gone cold turkey. I am on blood thinning meds.

I was probably peri menopausal rather than the full monty when I started hrt at age 48 yrs. I am now 51 yrs.

Has anyone had a similar experience ? If so did menopause symptoms hit you fast? I feel no different so far.

I had a very light bleed about 5 days after stopping hrt. I 'm assuming this was a withdrawal bleed.

I have also read blood thinners make periods very heavy. If my periods do return will they be like the scene in "The Shining " where the blood comes gushing out of the elevator doors and all the furniture floats around in the flood.

Sorry about your break. For future reference, transdermal HRT- patch or gel- is not linked with blood clots. In fact blood clots on HRT are very very rare- much more rare than using the Pill and I doubt women are told to stop that if they have an operation.

I know you have stopped but in your circs I'd have asked a meno consultant for an opinion before stopping.

Stopping HRT won't make your natural periods come back if you are post meno now. You will have to wait and see.

All I've heard from women who stop HRT is that if symptoms come back it can take anything from 2-3 weeks to 3 months before the HRT wears off.

Thanks Polly

Didn't know patches or gel carry less risk.Swomething to consider.

I'm not sure if my periods will come back. At the time I went on hrt I was about 120 days period free. GP said I could be on last lap towards menopause or it could just be a freaky hormonal blip. I will see what happens !
