Peri meno/meno heart issues?

Badders123 · 08/12/2016 14:32

Hi
I've been peri since I was 40
Since then I have been dx with atrial fibrillation and have had several episodes over the years.
I've had ecgs , bloods and an echo cardiogram and all were normal.
Today I am having palpitations and am dizzy - not really Afib though - and I'm so fed up
I've been on hrt on the hope of helping this for a month
Does anyone know anything else I can do?
Making me miserable today

I'm puzzled Badders. How can all the tests you had be normal if you have AF? Do you mean palpitations? I'm no expert on AF but thought some sorts were serious-ish and needed treatment. Sorry I can't help but not sure what your dr has advised.

PollyPerky · 08/12/2016 16:16

Is this what you have?

I can't see how HRT will make any difference. The idea of HRT for younger women is that is helps prevent the arteries furring up which can happen with an early menopause. But it's not a treatment for existing problems.

what does your cardio dr say? Have you seen one? If not, ask!

I was dx with af in 2013
(Blue lighted to hospital - very scary)
Because of my age I do feel I've been robbed off a bit tbh
I have tablets to try if it happens again
Thing is, it's been palpitations since
The two Drs I see are convinced it's due to hormonal changes - that is, peri
One is a heart specialist and he said that I'm
Obv genetically ore disposed to AF and so that's how I've presented
Other Dr says she has seen other women this has happened to - af due to peri/meno
It's rare in people my age
I'm just fed up

Discharged from cardiologist in 2013

The heart is structurally normal if you have Afib
It's a heart Rhythm disorder
That's why the echo was normal

The only thing they found was low potassium
That's it

It must be worrying for you. All I know is that palpitations are a common symptom in peri and nothing to worry about.
HRT may or may not help but it's not a 'treatment' for them as such. As it's 3 years since you saw a specialist maybe ask to see another but make it a gynae this time who is interested in menopause? (not all are!)

Badders123 · 08/12/2016 17:47

I will see how I go overnight...
In fact I had 2 ecgs at the dr a couple of weeks ago,
...all normal.
Sigh....
I'm starting to feel like a broken appliance :(

If only 2% of people with AF are age 40-60 (and a lot of those 2% are men; in fact the typical age of onset for women getting AF =74, 9 yrs more than typical age for men to get it), then it doesn't sound like AF is a common side effect of perimenopause or first 20 yrs of menopause. More likely some other reason why you're in the unlucky 2%.

It sounds like you're mostly not affected by AF right now?

PollyPerky · 08/12/2016 22:51

I don't think AF and palpitations are the same thing. AF can include palps, as it's a more serious issue, potentially, but palps are also listed in the lists of 34 peri meno symptoms. I think!

Badders123 · 08/12/2016 23:32

Not really - or if I am I'm asleep
(Had a sleep study which seemed to show some Afib at night)
Today has mostly been thumpy heart and feeling dizzy

I've just had a 24 hr heart trace done as my heart keeps racing. Typical - they took it off this morning and I had an episode this evening! It's horrid. No-one has suggested it might be menopause related yet

PollyPerky · 09/12/2016 08:23

There is a lot of info here about it all menopausehealthmatters.com/symptoms-of-menopause/menopause-heart-palpitations/

Badders123 · 09/12/2016 10:57

I have read that polly thank you
I knowmpalpitations are meno related - was unsure whether Drs are right and that's what caused my Afib too
Although with further reading it was poss due to my low potassium
