My period is now in its 3rd week - still heavy

I'm 48 and have always had v regular periods lasting 5 days. 3 heavy, 2 pretty light. For the last 2 weeks I have had heavy bleeding every day, and just when I thought it was finishing, it has come back again with a vengeance.
It's a complete PITA, but do I need to see the doctor? And if so what can they do about it?
I had a Mirena a few years ago and hated it, so not keen to go back to it.

You don't need to put up with it, go to GP and see about options. GP tried noristherone which I hated, then HRT which helped but made me depressed, now on a combination of qlaira which is a contraceptive pill and Agnus castus for moos swings. Mirena was going to be the last option if none of that worked.

I made it clear I wanted the bleeding regulated. I was also v anaemic which made the bleeding worse so ask for that to be checked too.

Thanks 80's very interesting. Hope my doctor is as on the case as yours sounds. Do they do blood tests to work out which hormone levels need to be evened out, or is it just a a process of 'suck it and see"...

Suck it and see I think. Blood tests quite unreliable till you through the menopause I think. But GP should be willing to try and help. For not, try another GP.

Yes see the doctor they can order a pelvic scan. It might be a polyp which is very easily dealt with. That will show on the scan.

I had a heavy period lasting about six weeks last summer. Stopped for a few days then started again for another couple of weeks! Felt tired but didn't seek any treatment.
I still occasionally get a period lasting two to three weeks but much lighter now. I'm nearly 48 and my previously regular periods have been all over the place for 18 months. Ahh, the joys of the perimenopause!

Definitely go and see the doctor, they can investigate. I had exactly the same as you, they took a scan, found no problems, and gave me transexamic acid tablets which really helped. I have a mirena now which I have to say changed my life - but appreciate its not for everybody.

This is a really common problem. Lots of options of you have to go down the surgical route which don't involve a hysterectomy. Hope you feel ok

I've just had exactly the same problem. I'm 49 and my period hadn't stopped for 4 weeks so decided to go to the Doctors.

I'm currently awaiting blood test results (to check for anaemia), and an ultrasound (booked for this coming Tuesday).

The doctor prescribed norethisterone (sp?) for 10 days and I'm relieved to get to the end of the packet because I'm moody, tired, achy and bloated with sore boobs. On the plus side the bleeding stopped very quickly but I'm really hoping there's an alternative!

I had the same a couple of weeks ago. I didn't go to the GP immediately as it stopped in week 4 - but then started up again, so I had had 6 weeks of heavy bleeding. I got told off for not going much sooner - they did lots of tests and ruled out anything suspicious, treated me for anaemia as I had lost so much blood and then got it under control with a combination of drugs.

I was told that any more than 10 days and I must go again - fortunately it was a one off for me.

I'm going through this too! I've bled in dribs and drabs for 3 weeks, & had a really sore boob. I felt awful during the night & was up with a temperature, aches and pains. I started to absolutely flood & I'm sick of it.
I'm taking evening primrose oil & tranexamic acid. I can't take anything hormonal because I've had breast cancer and a single mastectomy.
ARRGGHHH! My sympathies go out to you OP, & I hope that someone comes along with a good suggestion soon!

Coincidentally I have just started another period today! Arrrrrgh. Thanks for all of your replies, and very good to know the 10 day period rule, I will see the doc next time.
I found that the Mirena made me feel really awful and premenstrual, so don't really want to go through that again.
I find the Wellwoman supplements make me feel ok, but I should probably get some kind of test for anemia, as have been feeling quite dizzy and disorientated.
I remember it taking months until I found a pill that agreed with me, so I hope the same won't be true of treatment for this...
