Femoston 2/10

Hi I've been put on Femoston 2/10. I was on 1/10 but it wasn't working so dose was increased. I'd previously been on FemSeven Sequi patches but had a terrible reaction to the patches, prob the sticky part of them rather than the hormones.

Does anyone have any idea why Femoston 2/10 is only meant to be taken 'at least 6 months since your last menses' as the patient information leaflet says? I was still having heavy bleeds before being put on this so this doesn't seem to fit. My GP says she's checked the BNF medical book and advises me that these tablets are in the right category for me to take them but I'm still far from well.

Any help would be appreciated. I continue to get heavy sweats :(

It doesn't make any sense at all. What exactly does the leaflet say?

Femoston comes in 2 types- sequi and conti. The sequi type which gives a monthly bleed is available in 1mg and 2mgs strengths. The conti type comes in 1mg dose.

Conti is for women who are 12 months past their final natural period- so post meno - and who don't want a monthly bleed .

Presumably you are on sequi which is fine.

There is nothing in the leaflet about having to wait 6 months after a period.

There are 2 possibilities

• the wrong leaflet has been put in the box you have, or

-there is ONE leaflet which covers both the sequi and the conti versions, and you may have been reading the info which applies to the conti version.

Make any sense?

The other thing to check us that the pharmacy gave dispensed the right product. GP may have prescribed sequin but you may have been dispensed conti in error. It does happen.

I can't see on the leaflet whether this is sequi or conti. I have uploaded the part of it where it talks about being used in postmenopausal women at least 6 months since last menses. Doesn't make sense to me either as my GP (who has since left) says it's ok to take.

Just need to see if anyone else has seen this on the patient information leaflet as well.

Could I say that in the link polly perky has sent in her reply www.medicines.org.uk/emc/medicine/15925 there is mention of not using it until at least 6 months since your last period in 4.1 Therapeutic Indications. This is a different manufacturer to mine but does still say it. Thanks.

I take this and have just read the leaflet. You are taking a sequential hrt which contains oestrogen and progesterone.

It does state that Femoston is used by women post menopause however it also states further down that you need to start taking it within 5 days of your period if you still happen so I would assume that Femoston as a 'brand' is used both pre and post meno. Hope that helps!

joka I think what that statement means at 4.1 is that it's fine to be used by women who are post menopausal, rather than it can ONLY be used by women who are 6 months post menopause. You're misinterpreting it.

It's under the heading 'therapeutic' which means it's a treatment that can be helpful for women at that stage. Note in the same section it mentions that research into the use of women over 65 is limited and as a treatment for osteoporosis. So that section of the leaflet is aimed at older women , saying they can use it.

One reason for this is that sequi HRT is used by women who are in peri, irregular bleeding can occur when their own cycle overrides the HRT cycle. Additionally, women of any stage- peri or post meno- can use sequi HRT. They don't have to use conti- it's personal preference to an extent. I am 8 years post meno and use sequi HRT because I don't want to take 2 hormones daily.

Just to add- look at the treatments/ HRT on Menopause Matters. That site is written by a consultant gynae who is Chairman of the British Menopause Society.

The info on the site is correct and the type you are using is commonly used by women like you.
