Just wanted to recommend to all those suffering with the Merry Peri.. Am 47 and oestrogen levels not low enough yet for HRT. My gynae recommended Pro-mensil double strength now available at Boots. After 2 weeks finally sleeping through the night and feel human again. Plant based as far as I know.

I'm surprised a dr told you that your oestrogen levels were not 'low enough for HRT'. Did your GP refer you to a gynae for menopause symptoms?

I've never ever heard of that because usually HRT is prescribed to deal with the symptoms, regardless of what the tests show- reason being that hormone levels fluctuate daily in peri!

Anyway- good you have found something that works for you.

By the way, most HRT is 'plant based'- made from plants.

You've got to be careful with Red Clover- some women find it helps but not all.

Thanks pinkfrocks, yes I was referred for menopause symptoms. Had a few blood tests at different times in cycle and my gynae though being a great fan of HRT, didn't want me to start yet. Makes me wonder how bad things would have to get!! But for the moment, although I appreciate it may not do the trick for everyone, Pro-mensil had zapped most of my symptoms.

It's most unusual to be referred to a gynae for straightforward peri meno symptoms- why did your GP offer this? (You in UK?)

Red clover is available as just 'that' if anyone wants to try it- you don't have to buy branded, there are lots of different types but they are mostly all the same with red clover as the main ingredient.

hrt is beneficial at your age op. Plus it's more effective (and cheaper on prescription) than that promensil stuff.

Me too FN. The BMS guidelines say it's a woman's choice as long as there are no medical reasons not to take HRT and she is informed of the risks.

The most well-informed gynaes who are meno experts will usually suggest alternative / complementary options if HRT is unsafe for some reason, or if a woman is worried about taking it and asking for other options.

Pinfrocks I am in the uk, I asked to be referred as I wanted specialist advice as to which form of HRT (if any) would be the best for me. This was my gynae's advice, but she did say if I didn't want to try red clover/pro-mensil first, that she would prescribe HRT.

Am pleased I followed her advice as I am now symptom free, but will start HRT as soon as I need to

I hope you get on okay then. You are very lucky if - on the NHS- your dr referred you to talk about HRT because the usual practise is to try one sort then another if it doesn't suit.
