Menopause

Link between age you start your periods and age at menopause?

Just wondering really. For those of you that are through it - did you feel there was a link between the age you started your periods and the age of menopause. Perhaps there's some research on the subject but if you start early, do you finish early? Looking for a ray of hope as I started my periods at 10 and am suffering through the menopause/perimenopause at 49 - hoping I'll be through it sooner rather than later.

I don't know - from what I know you tend to follow in the footsteps of your DM /DGM ? So if they entered menopause early then you are more likely to ?

I started my periods at 12 - and at 47 have noticed no change in anything as of yet. My DM had her menopause at around 50 though.

My DM said that if you start late, you finish early Hmm but her advice on such things was always a bit iffy. I have read that there is no connection.

I have been told by the doctor that mother's age has some bearing, but that is not happening for me (not that I know for sure when hers stopped). One grandmother was 50, and I have missed that; the other was 51 so I am waiting............

My maternal nan had reached menopause in early 40, my mum about 45 at the latest and I am perimenopausal in my early 40. Periods started at age 11.

I have heard the same as DayLillie - may not be true though. My mum started hers at 11 and had the menopause at 54.

It's often said that you'll be similar to your DM, but I'd be surprised if anyine has looked closely at it.

I know DM and I started periods at the same age. But I'm still going (albeit with peri irregularities) at two years older than when she had her last.

I started at 12 and am not yet menopausal at 51. I'm ready for them to stop as they are heavier these days than ever.

I'd heard the opposite; that if you start early you finish later.

I started at 11, and now at 51 am still having regular periods. Wondering if I will ever see the end of it.

Started at 12, hysterectomy at 46 and having night sweats now (51) - so possibly starting menopause?

Mum went into menopause before she was 40, so there definitely isn't a link in our case!

I have read that starting early is linked to body fat/weight. I have also read that heavier women reach the menopause later.

Started at almost 13, last period just before 53rd birthday. Mother was similar.

Interesting...

I fear I am in the start early, finish late camp.

I am in the start early finish late camp... started at 10 and finished at 56. cant compare with my mum as she had everything removed in her thirties and no one talked aout it in my GM days

I started at 14 and a half, I started the menopause at 41 and I'm now on HRT as I was getting a lot of symptoms and only had four periods last year.

My Mum didn't have an early menopause, will be interesting to see if any of my sisters do (they are all younger than me).

I started at 12, at 49 only just starting to have irregular periods.

Have been dead on 28 days for past 13 years. Have the mirena coil, but it has been in for over 5 years now. Not sure if I should bother having it taken out.

I believe that the medical consensus now is that there is no connection.

There is a genetic link, however - my mum went through early menopause and so did I.

I started about 10 - still regular as clockwork at 49 and a half - mum started menopause at 45, both of us healthy body weight.

Although I take after my aunt on my mum's side she was about 48.
