Hiya I am new here so thought I would say hello when posting my first thread in the hope of some helpful advice.

I have been suffering terribly over the past 3 months from awful night sweats which always end up with a pounding racing heart. I have been t GP and she has reassured me that it is not my heart and as I have been suffering with menopausal symptoms over the past couple of years she has put it down to the menopause. I am 53 and after a bout of flooding my period stopped 2 years ago for 12 months but came back in September for one bleed and I haven't had a period since then.

Any advice anyone?

Thanks in advance.

Hi Shazzie

Welcome to MN, according to my friend's GP a gap of 12 months between periods determines the menopause but I'm not sure if I've relayed that information 100% accurately!

I can sympathise with the symptoms though.

Sorry I've not been much help!

Thanks for your reply JS.

I was under the impression that 12 months break from periods mean menopause but a couple of my friends have had periods back after a 12 month break which caught them out terribly.

I was so afraid waking with the pounding heart that I suppose I was after some reassurance that other people are suffering with this too.

Thanks again JS.

From what I understand, a gap of 12 months is supposed to mean that you no longer need to use contraception.

Menopause is from your last period, which is impossible to determine until later!

But I think in practice, if you have gone a year, they accept that is it and any more bleeding is suspect.

I think with the night sweats and palpatations, you are advised to cut down on things that make it worse, such as caffeine and alcohol.

Thanks so much for that summertineabdthelivingiseasy,

I was disappointed when it restarted for the one day that it did in Sept but hate these flushes and palpatations more. Hope they will stop very soon.

Shazzie
