Hair loss in perimenopause, is this normal ?

I'm 38 and in perimenopause for at least 2 years, possibly longer. I always had nice hair, thick and in good condition. In 2009 i split up from my children's father and since then it began to fall out and is thinner, dry and very brittle. At first i put this down to the stress, but now, 5 years on, it still hasn't improved. I haven't lost all my hair, not bald so it's still growing. It just keeps falling out and is just so brittle, dry and limp. I was diagnosed with perimenopause in 2012 and i'm thinking is it my hormone imbalance which is causing the problem ? Iv'e tried all kinds of shampoos and nothing works. Also i have dandruff which i never had up until a few years ago. This problem is really getting me down as i used to love my hair, it was one of my best features. I haven't started HRT yet although my doctor advised it a year ago. Ive been trying for a baby so that's the reason i haven't gone on HRT. Has anyone else had this problem in perimenopause ? It seems it's one of the less commom meno symptoms. Have you found HRT has cured it ? I'm at my wits end, i just want my nice hair back.

I know that hair can change as a woman gets older, part of the aging process but surely i don't have to suffer with hair this bad. I met a lady the other day who is almost 48. Ten years older than me and her hair is gorgeous, really long, thick and shiny. So age isn't an excuse. Didn't ask her if she was on HRT but she looks fantastic for her age. Slim, pretty, good skin and fantastic hair.

For me I had a year of unexplained hair loss but finally bloods were taken. My hormones levels were low and I was in menopause. Started HRT and hair is back to normal. Feel a whole heap better. Get your fsh levels tested.

Iv'e had my FSH tested and it's 20, a menopausal level i'm told. How long was you on HRT before your hair was back to normal if you don't mind me asking ?

To be honest it took a while to find a HRT regime that suited me. Unfortunately its not a one patch fits all thing. However once it got sorted about a month. My hair is back to how it was in my twenties. It feels great. I think people really don't realise what a trauma it can be when your hair starts falling out. My hair became very thin, brittle and would shed endlessly. I didn't have bald spots just very limp, fine hair. The HRT worked a treat for me. It doesn't suit everyone but for me it was amazing. Hope you find something that works for you.

Hello @erilou38 - I was wondering if you started HRT? If yes, did it improve or worsen your hair-loss? Thank you!

Hello - BlueDog - can you tell me what HRT regime worked for you? Many thanks!
