Does perimenopause cause hair breakage and loss ?

I'm 38 and in perimenopause, at least i think i am. My hormone blood tests show that my levels are not quite right. My periods are irregular, have been for about 2 years and are shorter and lighter than before. Iv'e been trying to conceive now for over a year without success which is really getting me down. I think what is getting to me the most though is the hair loss on my head. It's been going on for 4 years now. I'm not bald, my hair does seem to grow but it keeps breaking off and is very brittle and dry. Iv'e tried all sorts of shampoos and conditioners, both cheap and expensive ones. Even tried vitamin tablets, yet nothing works. I know it sounds silly but it's making me feel so down and upset. I used to have lovely, healthy hair that was thick and shiny. People would often comment on how nice it looked. Now it is just dull and dry and looks such a mess. Could perimenopause be the culprit here and would taking HRT help ? I took HRT for a few weeks a couple of months ago and it did seem to help some of my menopause symptoms but my poor hair stayed just the same. Maybe i should have stayed on the HRT longer to see results ? Anyone else having this awful problem ?
