mirena coil

hi had a mirena coil fitted today for heavy periods. wasn't expecting this as went for hysteroscopy so felt rather rushed into it.

so anyway am 47 and not yet menopausal as no other symptoms.

question,

does the bleeding stop fairly soon?

There is a lot on this on the family planning board...

Hi, just stumbled upon your thread and it could be me! I'm the same age, went for hysteroscopy for heavy periods, had a polyp removed and a mirena coil fitted,all in the blink of an eye! That was a year ago, it took 6 months for spotting to settle down, then had nothing but this week have had a small bleed, but nothing like before, so it takes a while but IMO is worth it

I think it's worth it too. I had a mirena fitted 3 years ago for very heavy periods and a large fibroid. I had 6 months of on/off bleeding/spotting .... but considerably less than pre mirena coil. Periods have nearly stopped since, but the fibroid is still there and has recently started playing up again for some reason.
The coil seems to help lots of women to avoid hysterectomy and D&C's. Also your doctor can add tiny amounts of oestrogen (by mouth) as you approach the menopause as an HRT treatment with the progesterone already in place, acting locally on the womb. I'm assuming this may be easier on my body than full-on HRT.

Hopefully it will work out for you..... the first 6 months are a pain, but it does control the bleeding.
