Bleeding after menopause

Hiya!

I am posting about my mum who is 50. She started her menopause in 2010. However a couple days ago she started bleeding, Prior to this she had been complaining of breast tenderness and pelvic pain. She says it feels just like a period.

Anyone else experience this? is it normal?

Her doctors told her to get an ultrasound asap which she did. The ultrasound was normal and they didn't see a thickening of the endometrium.
When the period stops she has to go back for a biopsy to rule out malignancy:(

Naturally we are very worried because apparently this can be a symptom of cancer :( :(

Any positive stories about post menopausal bleeding? Does this tend to happen often and are we worried over nothing?

If the ultrasound showed no thickening of the endometrium it would be surprising if it were endometrial cancer as this is usually caused as a result of overthickened lining becoming cancerous in some cases but it's good that the docs are checking her out and hopefully nothing to worry about. There could be all sorts of reasons for post-menopausal bleeding and also depends on how long since she had a period previously. There are polyps which can cause bleeding and problems with the cervix too. Wishing you and your mum all the best for a positive outcome.

It seems the prior ultrasound was wrong. They did another one today which shows two cysts in the ovary and thickening of the endometrium to 6mm. :(

Try not to worry- what has happened is very common and doesn't sound that serious.

First, your mum is quite young to be post meno- that means her periods will have stopped for a year or more. If she was still having periods- it's not clear from your post whether she was or not- this sounds like a normal period.

The average age of meno in UK is 52. If your mum has not had a period for 1-2 years then yes, it needs investigatng which they are doing. if she still has very occasional periods then it's not likely to be serious.

The other thing- cysts are not related to uterine cancer. Benign cysts are common- I had one aged 54 and it went away after 2 years though I was scanned every 4 months.

Also- the 'normal' endometrium in a post meno woman ( and we don't know from what you have said if your mum is) is under 5mm.

if she has had a period then 6mm is not that thick. Mine is always 6.4 -ish and I am on HRT which makes some difference.

A lot depends on your mum's meno and how far she is through it, but some women do have more periods after even a long gap of up to 2 years but the drs are doing the right thing to check it out.

After 10years of no period I have 1 now, and im nearly 60years old. Doc checked me out, but still got to go to hosp for further check. Any good news.
