Prostap injection - anyone else?

bumhead · 15/12/2012 22:08

I am not sure if this is in the right section but I guess it is.
I have PMDD (severe PMS) and was put on 30mg Citalopram to deal with it.
It's a hormonal thing not a depression thing but the Citalopram helps a little, it isn't solving the monthly problem.
So I was referred and the Consultant prescribed 9 months of Prostap (like Zoladex) injections, to put me into medical menopause. After which I will be looking at a Hysterectomy and removal of my ovaries.
Had my first injection yesterday in my stomach which is bruised and hurting today,
Has anyone else had this and any side effects?

I've never posted on a forum before & am really pleased Sleepy46 that my experience of Prostap has given you hope. I had my latest injection yesterday & this time it's a 3 month dose. My gynae is confident now that I've not experienced any side effects (so far) that she's happy to keep administering them every 3 months rather than monthly til I reach a natural menopause age or to reassess if/when the Prostap stops working for me.

I'm hoping Mother Nature is now being kind/fair to me as I've suffered so horrendously since I started my periods aged 10 with this (I'm 45 now). Here's hoping that as good karma I sail through a medically induced or natural menopause with ease! Fingers crossed.

Hi Ladymuck I too have never posted anything on a forum before, but saw this and am that desperate to speak to other women in the same boat as me, that I thought I'd speak up. I see other women at work, who are late 40's early 50's and I think why am I suffering so much each month and yet they look relaxed and calm and all chirpy and there's me slumped at my desk feeling horrendous and looking a mess (at least that's how it makes me feel). You start thinking is it just me and no one understands. So , you haven't suffered any dizzy spells, visual disturbance or anything when you started on prostrap.. Were you able to go to work after you had had the injection and carry on as normal? I take it you only have prostrap and no HRT? I hope this works for me, I know my husband hopes it works, cos I think he's had enough of me moaning all the time and saying Im tired, get off...

LadyMuck44 · 19/02/2015 17:10

Hi Sleepy46. You are right in thinking I'm only having the Prostap injection & not HRT as I'm not suffering in the slightest with menopausal symptoms. I have my injection in my tummy & that just feels like a scratch when the needle enters my tummy.

Don't be fearful of having the Prostap as from what you've said on here, I don't feel it'll make you feel any worse than you do already. Who knows you may feel tons better either having it on it's own or topping it up with HRT. On the off chance that you do feel worse then you can stop having them. I understand that they wear off if you don't keep having them.

As for going to work straight away I can defo say IMO that you should be able to go to work the same day as having it. I've got a tiny bruise on my tummy from the injection but that's it!!

I too was dreading the potential side effects & feel bit silly saying it, felt that by having my hormones stopped I'd be less of a woman somehow. My husband is pleased as we both thought I might change personality (lol) as no longer producing the hormones but I'm pleased to report it's not affected our relationship at all.

I hope you take comfort from my experience & maybe embrace this issue instead of fearing it. I don't think you've got a lot to lose but potentially everything to gain.

Sleepy46 · 20/02/2015 11:12

Ahh your comments and words are just what I need, thank you for your kindness. To be honest, what you said about the injection changing you or your personality is not as daft as you might think, because I have been thinking that too. My hormones, whether up or down, are what have shaped me and I was thinking that if my hormones are no longer there, what will I be like and yes, will I be any less of a woman and will I suddenly look old, because it is actually our hormones that keep us young looking. I just hope that I don't get loads of lines on my face - arrgh!! couldn't bear that! I also hope I don't get fat (that is, any fatter than I already am!) ha! I have read that Prostrap puts weight on you. As for my relationship with my husband, well I have heard that the HRT breathes new energy into a relationship, I hope it does, my poor husband is very understanding, but I think he is fed up of my saying I don't feel like sex all the time, but it's not me, it just my bloody hormonal state that stops me wanting to do it, both physically and mentally you just don't want to do it, it's weird, so here's hoping that the new chapter in my life on Prostrap will put me on a good equilibrium and breath new life into my relationship. I have taken comfort from your words and yes, I will embrace this rather than fight it and see where it will take me, hopefully on a new, positive, happy phase in my life.

clare4100 · 27/03/2015 22:42

I have just had my second injection...I'm pleased to say that the first month has gone fine, hardly any pain, thd pain before the injection was awful. I haven't put any weight on, although not had any hrt so not sure if this is linked with weight gain? Had a few hot flushes but would rather them than the pain! So far so good :-) I have however had a fair bit of bleeding, this will hopefully stop now. Tablets to control the bleeding have helped.

Sleepy46 · 28/03/2015 14:47

Hi Clare, Sounds like your first month seemed alright. I am going on Monday 30th to start my prostrap injections. I have been quite anxious and worried about it, but now I think I've got to the point, that Im so fed up with PMDD controlling my life for the past 10 years that I've got no choice, I'm also nearly 48 and peri menopausal so that adds to the misery aswell. So have resigned myself to the fact that I will start these injections and see how things go. I have to say though all the negative stuff I've read on the internet is quite scary. Have you been able to go to work (presuming you do ) since the injection?

SummerTime123 · 27/05/2015 18:34

Hi, first time on a site like this but I am struggling and am hoping someone out there can reassure me?!
I have suffered migraines for at least 10 years (I am 33) I have seen specialist and had every tablet going. Last year I was given Botox (31 injections in head) but no relief, I tried it for 9 months. I have tried every complimentary therapy going. Doc's feel there is a strong hormonal link so I have started prostap. Had 2nd injection yesterday. Migraines have increased in frequency and severity. I usually have at least 15 bad days a month now I have more! Is it likely to get better?! Or would it have started working by now? I get so down as migraines effect every part of my life.
Any advise appreciated.

Sleepy46 · 27/05/2015 19:20

Ahh Summertime, poor you. It is awful having migraine. I have suffered with it for years as part of my PMDD but I have to say since being in Prostrap and Livial HRT addback, my migraines have stopped completely. Are you on Livial too or just Prostrap? I have been struggling with being on this treatment and sometimes feel like giving up on it but I am persevering, maybe your migraines will cease as your hormones fully shutdown, because I know that my migraines were menstrual migraine and came mid cycle and continued to my period so it was the hormones that did it for me. It can take a couple of months on Prostrap for things to settle and for your body to become accustomed to it, so stick with it, because I felt horrendous for the first 2 months and am starting to feel better now. Good luck.

SummerTime123 · 27/05/2015 20:09

Thanks sleepy46! Am just on prostap at moment with the view of adding HRT in with the 3rd and final injection. They are talking of removing overaries etc but they want to make sure it's def my hormones before they do it! I definitely get worse before I am due on but don't get much relief throughout the month.

mizu · 13/08/2015 22:21

Had my 1st Prostap injection on Tuesday this week and am on a HRT placebo thing.

Like most of you on here, I have suffered for years with PMT and my life is ruled by it. Finally got referred and consultant ( who did an ablation op on me 4 yrs ago) said I had PMDD and was a prime candidate at 42 for a hysterectomy. Am now on waiting list.

Very nervous about all of it. Just want to feel normal tbh.

Don't know how the injections will make me feel though, I'm feeling quite achey today but is that the injection? Who knows!

My mum had a hysterectomy at 42 as did her mum at 44.

user1498747157 · 29/06/2017 15:46

Has anyone had an "Induced Chemical Menopause"? If so, I'm looking for advise. My GP has suggested this to me, due to me having extreme PMT. looking for pros and cons if possible thanks

famousfour919777 · 09/08/2018 13:42

PMDD is not the same as PMT. It is basically the evil twin - a dysphoric disorder.

Kaiyya22 · 04/09/2018 08:41

Hello everyone hope you’re all ok, just needed some advice please
Ok I’m 50 and had horrendous periods for years and years like 20!
so eventually 2 yrs ago started on the pro strap (depo) injection
First one I still bled
Second one had all but stopped 3rd one completely no periods and still 2 yrs later not one period!
Wow wow wow,
Feel amazing
Can live a proper life without carrying endless tampons amd towels around
Without worrying if going to beers and flood whilst I’m out (I would change and need to take clothes etc with me as I alsways flooded)
I had pains cramps endometrial problems and had scans
Had scrapes had tabs (trananmic acid amongst others
Pain relief 600 mg sis not touch the sides of the pain
Horrendous flooding and clots I thought I was dying
But these injections have stopped it all
Gave me a life
I’m happier I’m healthier and I’m living again
I was also so anemic I needed iron 2 x anday and had blood transfusions I was that bad
Yes I’ve gained weight but it’s worth it to stop all the other problems
So I am currently away for 5 weeks my next injection is due 8 days before I get back
I have it with me but never administrated it myself
I was needing to no
If I will be ok waititing till back in the UK to take it as that will be late and will I come in or blows or have pains?
Will it ruin the cycle of timing?
Or will I be ok
Or..... do I just do it myself?
I would rather wIt and get it done once home tbh but do not not not want any mess up to the cycle and begin bleeding again
Can anyone offer any advice or has anyone ever been late with this injection? And if so what happened
Many thanks for any advice
And yes do take this injection it’s amazing
It takes2-3 to fully start working and it’s worth it in The end
I am told I will have done the menopause in the next year so I will no longer need it
But u TIL then it’s saving thousands of pounds going to hospital to gynocilogy and docters and pain relaxed for the government and me
And if something works dont change it that’s my motto
Thanks for any advice you can offer
Take care
K

I've been on Prostap injection off licence now for 6 months as started new job and cant have hystctomy until I get paid sick leave for period of recovery which won't be for another 9 months. Was put on tibilone hrt for medical menapause after 3 months of hell, hrt worse and hands and feet swole up terribly so went on kliofem as elleste conti duet was discontinued. Been on this for 5 months but getting terrible stomach cramps like before and bleeding all the time. I want to find an Hrt that suits before having hysterectomy, read about a woman who took estrogen gel and. Progesterone tablet with testosterone. Anyone have any Hrt they can actually recommend. Was given everol patches other day but could not find one positive review so havent taken them. Help xx

Mamabear71 · 09/08/2019 20:45

Can I ask if you got side effects on prostap? I too got life back and no pains but flushes and insomnia nd brain fog was awful so I opted for hrt x

bek1245 · 12/01/2021 21:46

i have just been reading this thread with my mouth wide open... i literally have never come across anyone who shares my symptoms and find myself constantly moaning and no one understanding... i am 30 years old i have been diagnosed with PMDD i also have an undiagnosed ovary mystery pain that comes on ovulation for roughly 1 day then again the day i start my period which this pain is the worst pain sometimes it can be worse than labour pains and that lasts 2 days but then leaves me feeling very bruised and it is always on my right side after doctors doing all they can i then went private and he has suggested the prostap... now iv seen many forums with the prostap being the subject and to say im scared is an understatement anyone with PMDD will know the mood swings will know the low points and will understand when i say i want to relieve my family of this stranger i become ever month... the thing im hearing most about side effects id mood swings hot flushes and no sex drive (it couldnt get any lower if it tried) but i am still very worried about this i am still 30 and talks of menopause hysterectmies hot flushes are getting a bit on top of me if the injection is going to work is it going to bring on more problems when half of my condition isnt diagnosed yet? ladies i know this is an old thread but i would muchly appreciate anything any advice is welcome as i am due for this injection in the next few weeks thank you for reading my ridiculously long post that is if any one is still getting these.... xxx

Emilyb50 · 04/01/2022 09:04

Please can you add me to the Facebook group for PMDD?? 🙏

Emilyb50 · 04/01/2022 09:08

Hi bek1245,

I'm a stranger every month too. I'm undiagnosed. Already take sertraline and have taken for 20 years.
I also have polycystic kidney disease so take blood pressure tablets amongst other things.
I have a boyfriend of two years that's about to leave me. I'm heartbroken and don't know where to turn :'(

Maxine71 · 04/07/2022 19:03

Hi wondering if anyone can advise me on prostap injections. Ive recently had an endometrial ablation due to severe period pains but it hasnt worked and still suffering. Just been to see the surgeon for my follow up and he has suggested the prostap and livial hrt. Has anyone tried this?xx

Endlesscoffeecremes · 08/08/2023 15:15

Hello, I came across your post from 10 years ago! I wondered as you’re the only person with anything positive I’ve found to say about zoladex/prostap, did you have any problems with eyes from prostap? I’d be having it for a different reason. I had breast cancer from the age of 36 and then again last year at age 40, so I’ve been having zoladex for a year and a tonne of other meds. Having issues with eyes and my optician said there maybe blurriness with prostap? So I’m desperate to find out if anyone had this issue? My other option is ovarian removal obviously which I don’t want to do. Thanks in advance!

Autumncalls · 19/09/2024 17:34

I know this thread is from a long while ago. But is anyone still active for an update?

im due to have prostap for stage for endo in prep for full hysterectomy.

how did people manage hormone wise after, did they regain their sense of self? Worried about how ill feel x

Flojobunny · 13/11/2024 18:28

How are you getting on @Autumncalls ?

Autumncalls · 13/11/2024 19:17

Hey. So I’m due to get prostap 3 in 2 days time. First two have been weirdly ok. I was expecting to feel a lot worse tbh. I’ve had another recent CT scan and it looks like it may have shrunk a little which is great. I’ve changed my medication again as the tumour is pressing on coccyx nerve which was killing me. It’s been confirmed it’s not sinister and defo endo tissue just a very large mass. I was due to have surgery but my gynaecologist went on sick leave so awaiting her return as she is the specialist. I need a specialist as the growth is growing not only on my womb and vagina but attached itself to my sphincter rectum muscle. But on the up from where I was and not in as much pain. Notes to take from experience- take the prostap and keep going through pain medication until you find the right one for you. Hope you’re ok x
