Anyone experienced bleeding, years after stopping periods?

I went through early menopause at 42. On Femseven patches and Vagifem.
I last had a period five years ago. Last week, while on holiday (of course!) I started a heavy period which lasted a week.
Does anyone have a similar experience? Am wondering if it is a one off, or likely to happen again.

Most likely a one-off, and not all that uncommon, but you really should go and get checked by your Dr. Any post-menopausal bleeding needs investigating. Sorry, probably not what you want to hear, but you know it makes sense..

hedwig, please, please go and see your GP and tell them what has happened. You may need further tests to see what is going on or a change in your HRT. Either way, it is really important that you don't just ignore this and please see your GP.

Thanks for the feedback ladies.
There was me thinking it was just bloody inconvenient!
What are the concerns?

Post menopausal bleeding can be a sign of abnormalities in the cells of the womb lining (endometrium) or cervix. Do see your GP and also book a smear if you are not up to date

Go to see your GP please, it might be nothing, but my Mum ignored it and it was the first symptom of the cancer that killed her. Don't be embarassed just get checked out.

Your GP will (should?) fast track you for hospital investigations, so go tomorrow and you will probably get an hospital appointment by the end of next week. Don't leave it.

Thanks for the advice. Will see GP.

Yes this happened to me. Really heavy bleeding years after stopping. I was fast-tracked through smear, probes and other things. And given the all clear. Please don't worry too much but get down to the drs asap!

You should expect an ultrasound scan, possibly a transvaginal one to see what your uterine lining is like, then maybe a biopsy- done in drs surgery- then maybe a hysteroscopy- camera in uterus.

NHS might just do hysteroscopy/DC and miss out the other tests!

I've had all these tests after some odd bleeding so feel free to PM me if you need to.
