Did your periods stop suddenly ?

I am 47, and need to hear about other peoples experiences of menopause.

2 years ago my periods had a bit of a 'wobble' for a few months - one long gap of about 50 days, two periods close together, then back to normal. My health isn't very good, and my gp thought this could be because my weight was low, or the start of menopause. After this wobble, periods went back to normal ie. completely regular.

Now, my periods have just stopped! I have missed 3 periods. This has coincided with me trying a new drug but I an coming off it now, and no sign of a period. My weight has been stable; low, but the same as the past 2 years.

Its it normal for periods to just stop like this? My doctor doesn't seem too worried, but I have just started having seizures and I am trying to work out if my menstrual pattern is menopause o part of something bigger!

I an definitely not pregnant! I have started having sweats at night, but this is a common side effect of the drug I was trialling, and is reducing as I come off it.

Please tell me your experience, so I can judge whether mine is 'normal'!

Well initially the gap between periods lengthened by a few days for months, then I missed the occasional one. Then there was a gap of 5 months, then a gap of 9 months, and it's 18 months since my last one. Bur I'm still having hot flushes occasionally so I don't think it's quite over yet. Btw it's taken 6 years since the first hot flush.

That sounds more like the pattern I was expecting, rather than normal then .... Nothing! I could request a hormone test, but even that wont really tell me whether there is something else going on at the same time.

Yes, mine just stopped - only had one night sweat and absolutely no other symptoms (lucky grin]).

Mine have been all over the place - long gaps, shorter gaps, unbelieveably heavy...... All regular now I'm on HRT, and so much lighter.

My friend didn't have one for well over a year, then a few phantom ones (pains but no blood) and recently a long periodHmm

I think anything can be normal!

4amin, bear in mind that even though you've missed 3 periods, that doesn't necessarily mean you'll never have another one. At the beginning of last year my periods were still pretty regular, then I didn't have one in May or June, had another in July, then nothing till December. So 4 periods missed then. And after December - nothing. So just as I was thinking 'Well that must be it then,' I have started again today - after a gap of almost 5 months.

No hot flushes, night sweats, etc. though. So perhaps I've got all that to come.

I'm 52, btw.

Mine are like yours Princess...after a few years of horrendous periods many twice a month, I now have 3-4 month gaps then a not-to bad period, then another 3-4 months and an abbatoir period. I am nearly 49.

Thanks for all your replies, I guess I am within the normal range! Just have to make sure my doctor takes my hormone levels into consideration while they investigate why I'm now having fits!
