Do your periods get lighter toward the menopause?

I've been in peri menopause now for 2 years. Periods used to be 28 days like clockwork then became irregular. I would go 3 months off and then 3 months on. I've not had one now since October which is the longest I've gone.
I have a Mirena coil which has been wonderful for solving my heavy bleeding but it's way overdue removal and I fear the return of horrendous bleeding if I get another period.
